Just wanted to say hi to you all.
I just traded a m586 4 inch for a 642-2
shot it today, I forgot how much light revovlers jump.
Had a m60 many years ago. but had to let it go.
Have and shoot a m65 3inch heavy barrel.
It may not like its new little brother.
here is to little revolvers going boom!

Abandoned my LCP today in preference to a new 642-2. The 642 sure is more comfortable in my hand. Now I got to find a carry holster I like and get rid of all my hoarded 380 ammo :)

Cross draw holster for x42

Gordy and Milkmaster, welcome to the club.
Good to see intelligent choices characterize our new members.

Been away for a while.
(New love will do that. ;) )
______________

I've decided I want to try a cross-draw holster.

Anyone here recommend one for x42?

We may have discussed them in past years/pages,
but I'm feeling lazy today and my search button is broken.

I'm right-handed.

Welcome to the club! The 642 is an excellent choice, but I certainly hope you never regret selling your 586.

---

Took my 642 out today, sporting it's brand new barrel to see how she shoots. Turns out just as good as always. It's been a long while since I shot it (surprisingly, about a year), but it has noticeably less kick than I remember.

Probably ought to shoot it more often.

Wadcutters for self-defense in a snubnose?

There's an interesting thread here in Revolvers on that topic.

In the thread, this article is cited. It's an interesting, compelling read.

Might be worth some discussion by x42 shooters here or there.

" Found an excellent T shirt for concealed carry

Have started carrying our 642 OWB and have came across a T shirt made with an xtra long tail. http://www.duluthtrading.com/store/c...rts/95587.aspx

These T's conceal the 642 very well. I'm going to order more of them. Thought that I would pass it along to everyone as spring time is not too far off.

Rod "

Thanks for the link-exactly what I was looking for! I really like their long tailed Henley collar tees. Perfect for my 642.

Duluth Trading has lots of good ccw-type clothing.

I found out about their jeans a few years ago, and have generally updated my 'daily wear' jeans with their Ballroom Jeans. I also own a couple of their various work-type button shirts--and those have been the only items I considered to be poor value. OTOH, their "presentation" sports coat is one of my favorites.

After discovering how well their jeans work for j-frame carry in a Mitka holster, I actually e-mailed them about modifying some of their products to be better for carry--i.e., change the pocket designs slightly, particularly on their shirts and jackets with multiple pockets. A higher-level customer service person called me, talked with me about these ideas, asked me to follow up with some details in an e-mail, which I did. Then I never heard any more about it, and the pocket sizes and shapes were not changed.

Watch for their sales to save some money, and buy carefully--they can be a 'fair value', but they are marketing whizzes, I think.

Here's the link to their men's clothing.

So, I'm heading out to purchase a 642 today. I own several pistols, but this will be my first revolver. I decided to buy a revolver because of the reliability. I started to do some research on revolvers and I run into THR. I'm glad I ran into this forum and thread. Tons of useful information.

How much should I expect to pay for a new 642?

My question is on the issue of a holster for the 642...I have read recommendations on the Mika's pocket holster that I am interested in buying. Does the Mika pocket holster allow for a one-handed release of the gun from both pocket and holster? I was looking into a Galco holster. It has a hooked shape design at the base to catch on the pocket so that you can draw the firearm while the holster remains in your pocket.

Thanks in advance for the information.

I dont think that I will regret trading my 585 for the 642.
I owned the 586 for allmost 20 years and put MANY rounds down range with it,
It was my bowling pin gun that I shot very often. had to buy a dillon 550b for it.
I have not shot the thing for 3 or 4 years and it needed someone that was going to play with more than me.
My intrest was in a good carry gun that can be more comfortable than my sig 225, and a bit more boom boom than my kaltec 380.
now I have a carry gun for every situation that will come up.

Welcome to the Forum.

Having flown in from Kalamazoo last night I would recommend staying somewhere more "climate" right now. There was still a foot of snow on the ground although as you probably know there is a break in the action. The proverbial "midwinter thaw" which means there is only 4 months of winter left  Of course MI is a great place to be in the summer.

I did cook up a nice piece of Salmon on the grill Saturday evening. :D

The interesting aspect of the Mika Holster(s) is that it takes a totally different approach to all other types of pocket holsters I have encountered. It (X42) will definitely come out single handedly. It has a bit of rise on the forefront which can be used as a thumb assisted coax if required. That said, the Mika doesn't not require the aggressive "foot" to provide traction to keep it in the pocket or as a final release on the way out. Try it. You too will become a believer.

I am certain others will opine on this subject.

Price for a new 442 or 642 seems to be in the $450 range these days.

Bud's price is cash, no sales tax and no transfer fee. (Shipping is included).
You should be happy with $500 OTD or better at your local gun store. IMO.

I have a desanti pocket for a kaltec,
How is the one for the 642?

Welcome gordy. Well it may take awhile for Nem to get back with you since he might be "disposed" of for awhile. :uhoh: New Love and all.

The basic X42 Starter Kit might consist of the following:

642/442/ or Suitable J Frame Centennial Or Humped Back Body Guard.

Mika Pocket Holster (round or square cut) most opt for round unless you have square pants (pockets).
An inexpensive alternative is the DeSantis Nemesis (not Superfly).

Bianchi Speedstrips (come in packages of two) one pack minium. For reload.

Speer Gold Dot for Short Barrel .38 spl Plus P 135 gr Speer Part Number 23921
About any good quality 38 spl plus P will get you by until you find what you and your X42 shoot most effectively and subject to availability.
COR BON, Remington Golden Saber, Federal Personal Defense etc. It's fun trying them all. ;)

thanks for the info.
I always carry my gerber fast knife and a smaller para.
But I never thought to carry a flashlight.
I will have to give that a thought.

I used to carry a 642 every working day when I worked in a bookstore. One Sunday morning, just as I was unlocking the shop door, A police loudspeaker screamed, "Get your hands up a**hole! Get out of the ****en car--NOW!" I froze and slowly turned right to see a carload of older teens surrounded by cop cars, just a few yards away. They had just been involved in a drive-by shooting/murder and the Bellingham police quickly caught up with them. I'll tellyawhut, that 642 nestled in my front pocket never felt better. It's the perfect gun for the job and it feels natural in the pocket.

Later, I got a new job and traded the 642 for a 2 1/2" barrel S&W 686 Plus. It was a great shooter, slick trigger, sat perfectly balanced in the hand, but was waay too heavy in the pocket and too thick in the cylinder for me to carry IWB for any length of time. When I had no job at all recently, I had that 686 stashed in my van (lived in it for a year) and felt safe enough.

Nowadays, I thankfully have a good job doing work that's enjoyable and meaningful. Now that I have the wherewithall, I traded the 686 Plus for another 642. First time I stuck it into the Uncle Mike's pocket holster and slid it into my pocket, it was like old times; like reacquainting with an old friend. I don't believe there has been a better, more suitable weapon designed for concealed carry, except maybe a 442...

Hello all, I wanted to ask for some ideas on behalf of a co-worker.

One of our admin assistants recently got her carry permit, and she now has a 442. I am trying to help her find options to carry it, but there are limitations and I wanted to get some ideas if I could (without wading through 147 pages).

Money is tight, so some obvious answers may not be very feasible. Things like changing wardrobe or buying a nice purse with a pocket for the 442 may not be possible.

She is of a petite, slim build. She normally wears things that have shallow, snug pockets, so a pocket holster probably would not work, at least in the warmer months, without a buying a new wardrobe.

She tried my ankle holster, and that could be an option, since she often wears jeans that are flared.

Are there other things that may work, based on this (brief) description?

Thanks in advance

Chumango,

She can go check out the following site for ideas: www.corneredcat.com.

The site was created by one of THR's female moderators (PAX), for women.

She clearly doesn't like the purse option (usually the first target of a thug, can't EVER leave the purse unattended), but likes bellybands, IIRC. Smartcarry or Thunderwear might also be good options. Some of the 642 clubbers here carry their J Frames in that manner with great success.

But my sister, who is going to start carrying shortly, wears very form fitting clothing, so she'd have a hard time hiding an NAA Mini revolver. So she decided that purse carry is best for her (probably with a 2.25" Ruger SP101).

Great website, I highly recommend it to both women and men alike.
