Sight Picture of 642

Does the correct "sight picture" of the fixed sights of the 642 show the top of the front ramp level w/ the top of the rear sight...or does it show protruding above the horizon of the rear sight. Is the obvious downward tilt to allow for recoil flip (up)?

Thanks all!

Kleen Bore

Just make sure that when you use a lead away cloth that you do so only on stainless parts.

Using a lead away cloth on a blued finish or painted aluminum (ala 642 frame) is bad juju.

jad thanks for pointing that out. I should have made that clear also. READ the directions on the Kleen Bore package.

I've been using Iosso GunBrite for years to clean the fouling off the front of the my revolver cylinders, but only on stainless guns. 15 minutes with a small dab on a cotton patch and the front of your cylinder will look like the gun has never been fired. Some of it will be forced into the area around the extractor yoke, but a quick blast with solvent removes any remaining residue.

I found mine at Walmart, but it's also available at MidwayUSA if you're interested.
There is no need to look for anything exotic. I have used Mothers Mag and Aluminum Polish for years. The chemicals are less caustic than Lead Away and it is availanle at Walmart, Aces Hardware and just about all auto parts stores. A small container of it will last years as it doesn't take much to get the job done. I saturate an old rag with it and use it like the Lead Away, twisting and rubbing cylinder face against the material.

Hmmmm

Hmmmm, I'm on page 59, everyone needs to start posting, so I'll have something to read...when I get here.:)

Educate/Entertain?

Well.....Don't know if any of you 642 Club members reload or not. Has anyone ever tried a 38 Spec. with a roundball load? I've loaded 45 Colt with a 44 cal. .454 roundball,(that is a reloading manual load).
45 Colt inside brass measurement is .455, roundball .454.
38 Special brass measures .355, but 40 cal. roundball measures .395, 36 cal.= .360. Don't think there is a .358 roundball.
So if anyone has a 38 Special roundball load, that might be fun to shoot with a 642 as a practice round.
You know, entertaining on only my second post is a tough assignment.:)

Top level with rear to account for the recoil i think.

My practice loads for my .38 snubbies is 125 grain plated flat point bullet pushed by CCI small pistol primer and 4.9 grains of Unique. Snubbie "service" load is, nowadays, 125 grain Gold Dots or JHP pushed by CCI small pistol primers and 5.3 grains Unique.

Caught up

Well, my reading of Part Deux has caught up with the posts. So..... I'll have to confess to having a 642-2 for 4 yrs. Had it before I knew it was cool.
Daily carry,OWB, leather Old World holster.
Thanks Old Cav., I usually load SWC over 4.0 gr. Unique.
So, I guess I'll have to go back to the beginning, and read Part One.

i have a question with regards to cleaning. i recently put about 2 boxes of ammo downrange with my 642 and enjoyed doing so thoroughly!!! so when i headed home i still had some free time so i cleaned it up and lubed it appropriately.

my question is....
what is the best way to clean just above the forcing cone as well around said area. I spend the major of my time here because of all the build up. but i still have some there. my gun is not a safe queen but i still would like to be as clean as possible.

i use hoppes 9 with a copper brush and patches currently because i dont want to use anything to abrasive in cleaning due to the aluminum frame. so i guess what i am looking for is tips or trick you all use to clean up after a range use.

That brass brush it probably too abrasive for the aluminum frame as well. I just stick to a nylon brush and Hoppes #9 or Breakfree CLP. There will always be some burn residue in that area, but the technique I use has been effective in preventing buildup.

I'd just like to say that I love my 442 more and more every time I carry it. Post taking my cpl class but pre getting my permit, I decided to purchase a 442. Over the past year or two (can't remember anymore!) this thing has really grown on me. Not just the size and weight, but the safety and simplicity of it. The trigger has really smoothed out and I actually really like it now. I still really need to do more drills with it, but when slow shooting I can actually do kinda well with it now!

Since buying my 442 I've bought a 2 inch ruger sp101 with CT grips and a model 36 with hammer. Boy did I think that sp101 would replace my 442... and boy was I wrong. I do like the ruger, it is a TANK. And I did pay less for the ruger (practically unused) than the smith, but I still use the smith more. That 36 in good condition came my way for a song (or so I think) though and it's got a really great trigger now too. When I bought it it felt like my new 442 had made a bastard child with the sp101, combining their trigger weights into one gosh awful pistol.

Okay so here's the story, I joined this forum and bought a 642 a week later. I carry it more than any other weapon. Attached is a pic of where it has lead me. Is there a twelve step program I can join for this addiction.......

2. .22 Magnum
3. .38
4. .38+ P
5. .357
6. .44

Akzl, welcome.

You've already got 8 of the 12 steps necessary to cure your addiction.

Now, just add 4 more snubs, you'll have completed all 12 steps and will be free.

:D

I don't think I can afford four more.....I joined the 642 club two years ago and have bought 8, four more should take up the rest of 2010! lol

I too am a jframe addict now...I bought a 442, and now I MUST have a 340 (so I can give the 442 to the wife...;) ), and also think I need the 43C, so we can both train with cheap .22ammo.

How much .38special training ammo can I buy for the price of the 43C?...it doesn't matter.
(dduuuhhoooohhh!)

I bought a 642-1 in 1997 when I was forced to carry a Beretta 92F as a primary by the Sheriff's Dept. I worked for. I carried it as a backup in patrol and then as a detective. Retired now. The 642-1 followed me into retirement , the Beretta stayed with them, even though they offered to let me buy it at a great price. My 642 and I have a history and I am very fond of it. It was my partner in some tight spots, and now it and I keep each other company every day.

You might want to look at the 317 Airlite, easier to find used, I shoot the hell out of mine but carry a 642. Got it used for $400, well worth the money.
