Just a heads-up...
On the Cylinder & Slide website they are selling J-frame retro style wood grips for $15 a piece. I have been looking for a pair but didn't want to spend alot so this price is perfect.
Now to get a T-grip!!!

I removed the lock from my 642 yesterday on a whim....well actually I was cleaning and oiling the internals and since I had the sideplate off, I looked up a vid on youtube and followed the directions. About 10 min later, no lock. Its really really simple to do.

Out of curiosity, how many of y'all have removed the lock?

Here's the vid, Im sure some have already seen it, but oh well :)

2.5" J Frames

I see S&W is offering (all of?) the J-Frames with 2.5" barrels now. Touted positives are: Longer ejector rod. Better accuracy. Better front sight. Not mentioned but I'd guess better ballistics. One model is available ported.
I'll keep the 2" but it is appealing.

Hi, Im new to the forum. Recently I had an SW 340Sc stolen from my car when it was broken into. So, instead of paying almost $900 for a new 340PD, I thought I would give the 642 a try. I was only usind .38 +p in the 340 anyway finding full house .357 to be very unpleasant to shoot. I feel I should only carry what I routinely shoot so .38 +p it was.

Anyway, I was wondering about the longevity of the 642 when using +p ammo? I dont plan on putting thousands of rounds per year through the revolver, but I do plan on puting at least 500 rounds per year. I know this is a carry much shoot little but do reload and I do like to be good with my carry pieces.

Thanks

Dave

There's many a ~month~ I'll shoot 500 through my primary 642. No problems after three, four years. Don't remember how long I've had that particular 642. Your hand (or your wallet if you don't reload) will give out before the gun does. Even so, Smith & Wesson will fix whatever breaks, if it does.

Just recently got my first 642, and just today found this thread...I'll be looking forward to keeping up with everything that's going on here...

DA tells me that the club fell off the front page. :uhoh:

Yeah, I'm not doing my part either.
Got distracted by blades and sticks.
(See sig line.)

Nice to see newbies in the club.

I got 2 in the family...my 442 two-tone (stainless barrel, cylinder, trigger) and dad's 642 (he passed last October); mine gets used regularly and dad's is preserved & stored

I bought a no lock 642 in about 1997 or 98, and have carried it happily. I retired in 2007 and for my first qualification as a retired officer I used it, as I did not know if I had to use a gun I would be carrying or just any revolver and auto. The range officers were kind of down on 5 shooters, I guess because a lot of retired coppers don't shoot them well, and have trouble reloading. (I had to shoot five, reload one, etc.) Anyway, I shot 100 percent with the little guy, and those range officers had nice things to say about it then.
I love it, carry it now mostly in my pocket in a Michaels holster, or in a DeSantis ankle rig.

IkenI, I generally dislike wood furniture on any gun, but that looks very nice. What kind of grips are those?

And here's mine:
Felt like I ought to get a friend for my M&P so I picked up this new 442 with no internal lock from FiringLine the other day. I have a feeling I'm going to end up with an excess of holsters for it since it can be comfortably carried so many ways.

Any merits that make the 642 stand above other S&W snubbies.

Any merits that make the 642 stand above other S&W snubbies? Like older guns . when was the 642 first made??

Thanks all

If I provide the wood does anyone know of a grip maker that would fashion some boot grips for my 642? I like the thought of curly koa on a snubbie. Thx, Steve

Just checking in....

Not shooting much lately with ammo prices and availability, or lack thereof, in So Cal.

Greetings! Just thought I'd share a grip I've been running for the last couple of months. It's an old Safariland style. Fits in all of my pockets just fine, draws nicely and offers a full grip. It took some searching, but I found a guy with two sets, old stock, NITB. (Sorry for the crappy cellphone pics.)
