642 Club Part Deux

It's been a while since that I posted on this thread. Just to let ya know, my 642 is running great with at least 2,000 rounds down the tube. It rides in my jeans wherever I go.

how much "wiggle" is appropriate from the cylinder on these bad boys? Mine has a little movement, doesn't seem bad. I'm just wondering how tight the lockup is supposed to be in a brand new gun.

david, a little bit of wiggle is normal. Just what they do. Use the revolver checkout guide at the top of the revolvers area, and you'll get a good idea what is normal and what isn't.

revolver grips

Well, I mentioned a while back that I had gotten some Goncalvo Alves for my little beast.

Here's a couple of pics. It really changes the look, and feel.

And here it is in the factory rubber.

Haven't gotten a chance to get out and shoot it in the new clothes, but it is a neat feel. These are a little bit longer than the frame, just enough to give a full grip. They might end up getting slimmed down just a bit in a couple of places, but for now, I'm kind of happy with them. Really happy with how they look.

Problem fixed.

I bought my 642 used off of gunbroker.com. The double-action pull was heavy, and a strange thing was happening - as I fired it more, it would 'tighten up', to the point it was like weight-lifting to get the thing to fire. I didn't want to take the face-plate off myself, so took it to my (excellent) gunsmith. The thing had basically dried up in there, and it was the friction and some 'burrs' that was causing the difficult pull.

He lubed and polished off the burrs, and the trigger is smooth as silk. Alright.

642!

Way to go, Peacenik. Lots of times, improper function in a firearm can be easily fixed by a good cleaning. Most don't realize that, and give up on it before they should.

Sixgunner455 those grips are sweet! Very classy. Did you pick them up for a good price? I was just curious as to how much they would run and what would be a good price if I wanted to pick me up a set down the road for myself. Nice! Very nice!!!!:what:

Sixgunner - those are very sharp. I always concern myself over the grip if I was in an intense situation would it be slippery?

How they feel down the range for you?

Been working from dawn to dusk since I got them, so the first chance I will have to shoot with them on will be tomorrow if I don't get off early today.

In the hand, they feel great.

Rear pocket carry?

So, anybody here carry their J-frame in a rear pocket? Don't know why I never tried it before, but today I did. I wear standard generic jeans and an outside-the-belt shirt, and everything disappears nicely. Revolver is in a DeSantis Nemesis, which goes completely into the pocket, and the butt of the gun is just outside of the pocket, allowing for a much easier grab than from a front pocket. The cylinder is off to the side enough that it's not uncomfortable to sit down. Best part is that I can get to it when sitting, which I can't say about front pocket carry.

Only downside I can see that it would be easy for someone to grab if they figured out it was there, but that's probably true of 4:00 IWB carry too, which I sometimes use.

It looks like you unloaded your pockets.

Where are your pants?

I leave everything in my pockets and fold the jeans on a chair next to the night stand. The ankle holster and 642 are under the jeans.

If you need to respond in the middle of the night, it is good to have pants.

This works well at hotels as well as home.

I do have a flashlight (First Light Tomahawk) on the top of the nightstand and our home defense handguns (but not my carries) in the drawer.

I am sure there are other solutions, but this keeps everything where I am used to it.

Dirtypacman--

There is no problem with slipping, even with this stupid bandage I have on my right thumb (cut myself making lunch).

Banana grip, in a pretty wood, looks good and feels good. Gun is still a little beast to shoot, esp with the wound and my headache today.

Worst day shooting is still way better than the best day working, though. :D

Angel1216,

Nightstand gun is a S&W 686-6 2 1/2" barrel loaded with .38 +P 125 gr. JHPs. I like larger and heavier weapon at home, more substantial to hold and very smooth trigger. I personnaly feel .357 are overkill in house and I'd probably have no night vision after first fireball! This is my third 686 and I am very comfortable with it. This could also be used as carry piece in the deep winter but totally trumped by 642 during the rest of the year. Cell phone and small Maglite sit alongside the S&W 686.

I got a Grandfather Oak IWB for my 642 a week or so ago.

It appears well made, and was reasonably priced. It is quite comfortable, and conceals easily.

It's not as big an issue for IWB, but I do wish it had tighter retention.

Panic! I noticed the thread dropped to page 2!

Took the 642 out on Friday and ran 5 different types of HP self defense ammo through it just to see the difference in recoil, etc. I find I still like the 135 gr +p Gold Dots most of all. I also spent about half the range session practicing reloads from the speed strips, and definitely am quicker with the 2+2 format. Just make sure to line the cylinder up quickly when closing it on the empty chamber post reload. Like most other things, it comes quicker after practice.

To all the forum members that have lost loved ones in defense of our country, thanks to them and your families for their sacrifice on this Memorial Day. It's not about lakes, bbq's, and a 3 day weekend. It's about remembering those that have paid the ultimate sacrifice. We must constantly remind those around us of that fact.

Sorry to be such a stranger here 'bouts lately. I'm experiencing a financial crisis in my business that's motivating a move to another city (where it will undoubtedly thrive, even though ccw there promises to be a lot dicier ... :scrutiny:).

As a result, my time is very slim these days, and what time I have on THR is being spent mostly in "my" two rifle threads (well, I started them, but they belong to everyone): 336 Club & Marlin 39 Club.

Please know that my absence from X64-ville doesn't indicate disinterest. I'm still reading when I can. Good to see the club house alive and well.

hartg01 - Greetings!

Try dry firing at the TV while seated using one and two-hand grip positions. The TV accentuates the front site. Pay close attention to where that front sight goes when you squeeze.

For a little fun, select a target and then look away from it. Now raise the 642 one-handed and point at a target using peripheral vision. Then check where you're gun is pointed. You may be surprised.

Personally I use only the front sight when practicing with the 642. YMMV.

Dry firing with the Crimson Trace Lasergrip model has added an entirely new dimension to my close-in marksmanship. Just point and shoot. Amazing how quickly one can get that little orange dot on target. And one can see exactly what happens during the trigger squeeze and when the hammer clicks.
My 642CT gets my very highest recommendation.
Of course outdoors in bright sunlight, I'd go for the sight picture, but indoors or in dimmish light, it's a winner.
