Community, comedy and safety

Been meaning to say this for a couple of pages.

It's a pleasure to hang out here with
such amazing, intelligent, caring people.
I've never met a single one of you,
but wouldn't hesitate to share lunch.

I can remember only one minor conflict in parts one and two,
and it was very quickly resolved.

As a result, we have a good time.
While we learn about little mules,
we joke, cajole, and practice frivolity.

Yet, lest we promote a cavalier attitude,
especially among new or young members,
we should remind ourselves that
these are serious tools that we discuss.

Even during a punch line,
we can't forget the four rules of gun safety.

In case you haven't reviewed those in a while,
here are three good versions (out of dozens):

The High Road
Cornered Cat

Thanks for the welcome, I sure appreciate it. I won't be giving my son the 629, thank you very much. I already gave him the 686 and he will probably get the first 642 as well. He's married, with children, so the money is not flowing in rivers. I believe he'll end up with the 642 in a pocket holster and the 686 will be in a rapid access handgun safe at home. Maybe mommy will end up with it in her car. She is a born and raised Texan.
I like a primary carry with some oomph to it. I figure .44 Special silvertips will be okay for CCW and I can also use some .44 howitzer rounds for hog (Four legged, that is). I plan on carrying a 642 offside, in a Mika pocket holster.
Have any of you fine folks had a 642 hardchromed? Seems it would take some worry out of cleaning issues.Speaking of cleaning "Issues", I've noticed some various references to using Gunscrubber and brake parts cleaner. In my experience, non-chlorinated brake parts cleaner is very useful. I don't use it to actually clean, however. I clean with Hoppes #9 or what have you, then blow all the gunk out/off the firearm with the BPC, then lube.
Its pretty much the same thing as Guncrubber, at about 1/3 the cost. I've used this process on aluminum frame firearms with no problemo.

Nem,

Your post is definitely worth a second (and even a third) pondering.

Well said...well timed...

+1

and at 2,400 posts we are almost half way to the 642 Club part Treis

Can I be in the club? I don't own a 642, but I'm awfully fond of my 649, and I just bought my girlfriend a 638 that she's had a real blast shooting. I wouldn't trade my little j-frame for anything.

squinty - Welcome to the 642 Club, all snubnose revolvers are welcome here, even the HEAVY ones ;)::

Model: 649
Caliber: .357MAG/.38+P
Capacity: 5 Rounds
Barrel Length: 2 1/8"
Front Sight: Black Blade Front
Rear Sight: Fixed
Grip: Rubber Grips
Frame: Small - Bodyguard Style
Finish: Satin Stainless
Overall Length: 6 5/8"
Material: Stainless Steel
Weight Empty: 23 oz.

How do you carry that cannon?

Angel, it's a 637,
a 642 w/o a bobbed hammer.

IMO, the victim made one really big mistake:
She went back outside after having gone inside to get the gun.
(Well, OK, her first mistake was not having CCW, but ...)

Let's be realistic here. Once she went inside,
why didn't she just lock the door and call the police?

Why did she feel compelled to go back outside to
(reporter's words) "make sure the man was gone"?

I mean, I'm glad she's OK, but people need to think.

What kind of grips are those?

Nem - I agree with your assessment, in addition she agrees to talk to reporters and go on TV??? :banghead:

The_Shootist - Please keep us updated on your progress :)

ferretray - The aluminum frame is not so much the issue as is the clear coat finish. It will not tolerate aggressive cleaning with harsh chemicals. I use Breakfree CLP and just let it sit for awhile and it works well for me. The good thing here is that S&W will refinish the clear coat upon request in the event of damage or wear. The official cleaning regime for the 642 Club is posted here: 642 Club Blog of Knowledge

As I've mentioned before, I like my little mule.

But in retrospect, I wanted a 442 instead of a 642. Call me weird, I just like black better than silver.
(Being a creature of the night, I like things that don't shine in the moonlight. :uhoh:)

So, I'm wondering: how does the 442 finish stack up against the 642 finish?
That is, is it more resistant to cleaning chemicals?

Since one can have a 642 bead blasted, I'm wondering if it might be just as good to have one ...
coated in a tough black finish that might be better than the finish on a new 442.

Any thoughts?

(And, yes, DA, I'm aware that the M&P340 comes in black. )

Good story, but I'm not sure i buy it. If you look at the gun you will notice it have the lock on it we all know that those are design to lock up when the owner need the weapon for thier protection. She should send it back to S&W for repair.

be safe

...a tough black finish that might be better...

Nem - Over time I have come to prefer the black finish as well, I am considering a refinish, maybe black chrome or ?...

The Diamondkote looks interesting and the price is good too:

The CeraKote looks good as well, more expensive, but it's all relative:

We've talked about this before, Birdsong black T:

Good story, but...we all know that those are design to lock up...

johnnylaw53 - Yep, that's must be why she only got off one round...locked right up ;), you would think she could have got a nice COM hit at H/H range though, seeing as how the lockers are more accurate :D.

JT, thanks much for posting that data on refinishing.

I've bookmarked them all. Not sure if it'll be cheaper to get this 642 refinished, or just sell it then buy a 442, or try to trade it for a 442.

Do you (or others) have a sense of roughly how much such coatings as Diamondkote or Black T cost? For example are we talking about $50 - $75, or more like $150 - $200?

I know we've talked about this before, but ...

After some searching, it appears that the Cerakote craftsman mentioned in that link, Doug Burche of Fit 4 Duty, may no longer be in business. The link to Fit 4 Duty comes up empty, as does a web search on the company name.

A search on Cerakote, however, nets a company called LTM Refinishing. (From their home page, it looks as if a family death has slowed them down, which is not an issue for me. I'm a ways from even making a decision, let alone doing this.)

I just stumbled onto a fine thread,
started and guided by one of our mods,
about how to reduce the probability
that one will need to use the little mule
in a SD setting by de-escalating a situation.

It exemplifies The High Road,
and why I call this home.

I've been swithcing off between a 442 & 642 for about a year and a half now and show very little wear. I carry both in a DeSantis Nemisis pocket holster. I'll try and take some pictures and post them. They really look great no noticeable wear.
