My apologies, I did forget about jt1's generosity, especially with all the e-linkage he provides. I'm actually considering some of the re-finishing jobs suggested recently - very sharp.

Second, no apology necessary, I'm sure.

I didn't mean to criticize your post.
Just wanted to honor our friend JT.

I agree about those refinish jobs.

Very sharp, indeed.

virtues of the x42 line

There are a lot of excellent reasons that the small j-frames are one of S&W's best selling product lines.

On another note, a poster on another carry thread raised an excellent point about pocket carry; he noted that accessibility may be limited in certain situations such as when you are seated. Many of us have and regularly use the Mika and other pocket carry holsters and I intend to continue to do so; but, I have also just purchased an OWB for use in the car and other appropriate situations. I for one was becoming a one-trick pony without thinking everything through.

A great complement to a 640 or 642 in a Mika pocket holster is a 442 or 642 in a Renegade ankle holster.

Ankle carry is terrible if you are standing, particularly in a crowed area (pardon me madam, I will get my nose out of your backside after I retrieve my weapon), but ideal when you are sitting. Particularly in a car with seat belts and shoulder strap.

It is always a good idea to have a backup anyway. Having the carry mechanisms complementary is a bonus.

I learned everything of value I now know regarding revolvers on the 642 thread.
Maybe a bit of an overstatement. I had a couple beverages last night. ;) But it isn't an overstatement when it comes to THR.

I haven't been to the S&W Forum for months. I occassionally checkout the Firing Line Forum and since I purchased a Ruger Mini-14 and Seecamp I will visit their Forum sites, both outstanding BTW. Having said that, if I could only view and participate in one Forum and one thread you can bet your Buffalo Bore you know where I can be found. :D

At Ease. Smoke em if you Gottem.

Yes indeed, jt1, he is the man for sure and certain. Amongst many, many others.

I still intend to check out a shoulder rig,
especially for the cooler seasons ...

Quick introduction

I just registered for THR, specifically for the 642 access. My 642 "lockless" should be in next week. I have an early Mod 60 that I carried when I was younger, then went to the 1911 Combat Commader/S&W 4566 (I still love the .45ACP - sorry!), but have now returned to something a bit more "comfortable" to carry. The 642 with a set of CT seemed to be the solution to both my aging eyes, and the hot Alabama summers.

I'm looking forward to finding a lot of answers to questions I didn't know I had. :)

I hope this gets posted "correctly" (in the right "spot").

wfa: Welcome. It is always an honor when a new member puts their very 1st post here in the club. As for 642 info, you have hit the mother lode here, my friend.

Hey guys.

Need alil advice here on a 642, figured this is the place to get it right.

Theres an older 642(no dash) old style trigger and hammer, no lock and true anodized frame for sale another forum I frequent. Ive met the gentleman that owns the gun before at a class and know hes very particular about his weapons so I have no doubt its in good shape.

Hes asking $450 for it. Is this a good price?? I know nothing about these revolvers other than the new ones are expensive and no one wants one with a lock, so some help will be appreciated.
Thanks

If it is in good shape I wouldn't hesitate at that price. New 642s go for $379 when on sale around here. There is a thread at the top of the revolver forum that tells you how to evaluate a revolver's mechanical condition.

Dzl Hog

Welcome to the 642 Thread.

The price is ok, not great but if you like and trust the guy again it's an ok price. Maybe you can get him to throw in a box or two of SGDFSB.
Check on that version, I don't recall if that is rated for Plus P or not.

Did you know you can get a NIB 642-1 with no lock and Plus P rated for about $429 plus $12 shipping plus your transfer fee.

Dzl,

I would pass on that if the gun is used. If you could talk him down to 400, that would be a fair deal.

I paid 450 for my 442 new. As desirable as the older models are, a used gun that isn't particularly rare seldomly meets or exceeds its initial price.

DZL HOG,

I'd normally suggest to buy local (to support local purchases), but you can get them new, no-lock :)neener:), at quite a few places since the 3000+ "limited run", e.g., Gunsamerica, Gunbroker, Topgunsupply, Wild West Guns, and Auctionarms (one listed for bids starting at $385 + $15 shipping - search "smith 642 no lock"- AL). You'll find your time here worthwhile!

Sellier & Bellot .38 Special LRN

I had a weird happening on the range today. I've only owned my S&W 642 for a bit over a month and I've only run about 50 rounds through it.

Today I took a box of Sellier & Bellot .38 Special LRN 158gr ammo with me and fired off three shots. The cylinder jammed. Upon inspection I noticed that two of the bullets had dislodged due to the recoil, thus locking the cylinder.

I cleared the jam, reloaded, fired four rounds... same thing.

I had formerly run Federal FMJ ammo through the 642 without misadventure. Is there a problem with the Sellier & Bellot method of crimping or am I just too spaghetti wristed for the 642, thus incurring more recoil than this ammo can endure...

Welcome the the 642 Club.

I have put alot of different rounds through the 642 and I don't recall trying any S&B. Unusual you would have crimp jump and I highly doubt it has anything to do with a weak grasp.

I would steer clear of it and see if Remington or Winchester low end for practice provides positive performance.

I would also pick up some "what you think you will carry" rounds and give those a try.

Again welcome and don't forget to report back and post those pictures.

Thanks a bunch for the welcome, I'll keep you informed as I test different brands/types of ammo... And... here's some pics :D

Thank you for the welcome!

I hate to start out "on the wrong foot", but I have a question, and it's a little "off topic". I'm posting it here because you guys seem to be able to say "I don't know" - you don't "make it up as you go along" :)

The question concerns my "Mod. 60" (no "dash" anywhere, but with a ".") sitting in my pocket waiting for the 642: I seem to remember that S&W said any J frame with the Mod number in the crane cut out was OK for +P, but we're talking 30, maybe more, years ago. Does anyone remember that info from Smith, or am I delusional?

Walt

Mod. 60

Nope, that's the .357 rated version on Wiki. I bought mine, as best I can remember, in 1974 or 1975. It was early enough, and I shot it enough, that it went back to S&W for a timing problem because of soft "rachet". I've never had a problem since.

Thanks for the honest answer!

Walt

WFA, that model 60 is from SW's benchmark XD9-447 series.

It was meant to accept not only .38 spl +p,
but the really hot .357 mag rnds,
plus M198 howitzer rnds.

No, really, just kidding. I don't know.
But this is the X42 club, so you can't blame us. ;)

(JT may know when he gets back ...)

Picked up another pre-lock over the weekend for about $100 less than a new locker. In the factory box with all docs. Looks like new.
