Guys, I'm trying to find a 642 with no internal lock. I have a couple good contacts to go through. My questions is, can anyone purchase a 642 without the internal lock?? I've been told by a source that the 642 without the internal lock is for law enforcement only. This doesn't seem right.

My other source is telling me that these are on back order which sounds about right with just about everything I'm wanting these days.

Hopefully a knowledgable person with an FFL can answer this. I'm not looking to discuss internal lock vs. no internal lock.

Thanks.

lol I hope not, cause if so my local gun store is in a helluva lot of trouble. =)

I own 2 w/o lock... and I'm nothin' but a regular ol' civilian.

On backorder I can believe... Everything worth anything is hard to find at the moment.

I was bidding on one at Auction Arms until the price got too rich. They are out there - the lock versions are more common (obviously), but you can find the no-locks. Bud's Gun Shop has them on occasion, too, or so I've heard.

I purchased this one last November through Cabelas. They ordered 4. I got one, another guy, and the 3rd one was purchased by the Cabelas guy I ordered from. The 4th was placed in the gun counter and was sold the next day.

Before the ILS was installed on all S&W revolvers the M642-1 was the .38 Special +P rated no-lock model. Recently S&W released several Thousand M642-1 revolvers to the general public follower buy no-lock M442's. They were snapped up fairly quickly but if you look around you can probably find one. NO, they aren't for LEO's only... They were being sold by Top Gun among others. I know both are listed as "Out of Stock" but I wanted you to see there is no restriction on the sale.

Thanks to all for replying with positive info for me. I'm gonna hold out for the no lock version.

Much appreciated.

Your best bet is to find one on Gunbroker as the distributors have been OOS on these for quite a while. Smith & Wesson has stated they will not be making more.

The information your source gave you is related to the M&P pistol. Originally, Smith & Wesson was only selling the no-lock M&P pistols to PD's. That didn't last long.

S&W didn't state they weren't making any more. As a matter of fact, I highly doubt they would make the no-lock M642 and M442 a regular catalog item if there weren't going to be any more.

They said the no-lock M37 was a one time deal but then again, they aren't in the catalog.

Wasn't able to PM Trayzor. Anyone know who sells the speedloader and black case that is shown in the photo with his 642? Thanks

Im probably thinking the 642s sold so fast because they were 642s and in high demand right now rather than that they were 642s w/o the IO specifically.

the question becomes "why would you want to enrich a company that builds the poorly designed, ugly, potentially dangerous locks?"

Every time I see the lock I think about what it represents...capitulating with the anti-gunners. The IL Smiths are the Clinton Editions.

I certainly hope you're right ArchAngelCD!

Smith and Wesson is notorious for cataloging guns they no longer produce.

I agree... and disagree.

The 642 is a classically perfect carry pistol, and now that most states allow CCW permits, the 642 is established as "the" revolver for CCW carry.
So yes, it's popularity is obvious.

BUT, I also think that we who have "lock issues" for a carry weapon drove the sales of the "no lock" 642 from the get-go.

I already had a Clinton 642 when I heard that a no-lock was available. I immediately located a dealer that had them in stock and bought one on the spot.
I ordered mine here and picked it up from my FFL just a few days later, but as you can see, they're out of stock.

And no, it is not necessary to be in law enforcement to buy one... if you can find one.
