I just bought a 66-1 unfired from a gunstore for $499 otd.First, is this a decent deal and second, what do other owners think of this gun, just general impressions. Also, where can I find a set of the finger grooved grips I keep seeing, they look greeat on the 66.btw it is a2-1/2 in.I love snubs.:)

I have a 6" 66-1 that I bought new from a local shop in 1980. Paid $379 OTD then, so you got a smoking good deal in 2006 dollars. Joe

I've got a 66-3 w/ 2.5 inch barrel I bought years ago...in fact, I bought it to replace the model 19 w/ 2.5 inch barrel I sold to a co-worker for $275. Paid $375 OTD for the 66-3 and won't ever get rid of it. Now I also have a few snubbies from Taurus in 22 mag, 38 spl and 44 spl...nice guns for the lower cost but not a Smitty!

I wish I could find one with a 4-inch barrel. I like the countersunk chambers and pinned barrel. Unfortunately, Smith had to cut off the bottom part of the forcing cone on these and this weakened it a bit and caused some cracking on some early models. If you shoot mostly 158-gr. JHPs and .38s you shouldn't have many problems (if you're going to shoot it).

I've got a Model 629-1 or -2 that I can't bring myself to shoot.

I was not aware of this problem. It was my impression that the 66 was used by police, and as such, any wear problems would have surfaced long ago.If a problem occurs would smith and wesson repair the gun even though it is old,and i am not the origional owner?
