I recently purchased a model 66-1 Smith and Wesson. It has the recessed cylinders but no pinned barrel. Does any one know if and when Smith may have built these series guns? I know they dropped both features on the model 66-2, (I think). Any input on this? Thanks.

That is what's called a transitional gun there are lots of examples of these. As they used up the pinned barrels they started using the non pinned barrels.
The 66-2 started in 1982

Exactly. To get an exact days of manufacture, post your serial number in the S&W date thread and someone with a catalog will provide you with an exact year your gun was made.

I nearly bought a 66-1 at a gunshow this weekend that had a pinned barrel and non-recessed cylinders. Transitional guns are odd ducks, for sure.
