I got my 681 back Thursday... it started life as a very basic, plain, barebones 4" 681 with a square butt. I decided to convert it to a round butt 3". I thought that would make for a pretty cool and heavy-duty defense revo, but when I got it back, I was surprised by what an incredible defense gun it has become!

It's much like a 3" 65 on steroids... the brawn and strength of an L-frame, but just slightly larger and heavier than the K-frame 3" M65 (another favorite of mine). Very sleek with the fixed sights and quite concealable with the 3" barrel and round butt. Also capable of handling a steady diet of hot loads with ease. The thick barrel is quite beefy (as you can see in the pics) and really helps soak up recoil! It is a substantial revolver indeed, but still sleek and concealable.

It took me a while to find the right base gun...

• no internal lock
• forged steel trigger and hammer (flash chromed in this case)
• lightly used, nice finish
• excellent action (seems typical of the early L-frame guns)

The Performance Center did a great job with this... considering rounding a square butt is not something they officially "offer". Gene did it as a favor to me and did a beautiful job of it.

The gun had a higher than typical polish level (my doing) when I sent it to them and they matched the finish on the barrel to the gun... matte top and higher than standard polish on the rounds. It just gleams (thank you Flitz). I like it so much, I'm tempted to send my other 4" 681 for the same treatment... here's how she looks.

Looks great. BTW DHart, I believe you have one of the finest revolver collections I have sever seen as far as my tastes are concerned. Regards, Mike

Now, that is one of the NICEST revolvers I have ever seen. That's a great package. I'm a sucker for a 3" revolver. I've been looking for a 4" 681 for a few years. If I find one, this is the kind of setup I would like to have done.

Perfect!

You are a very dangerous man who is a harmful influence upon the population at large. THANK YOU! My 686-6 seven-shot six-shooter is getting closer to making the trip to Smith to have my 3" CS-1 barrel installed...and it's ALL YOUR FAULT!!! THANKS AGAIN!

DHart,

Gorgeous! You have one of the finest concealed carry guns in existence, in my opinion. Now, to make it absolutely the finest carry gun (not just carry revolver) period, send it to Tool Tech and have them install a trijicon front sight.
