custom 681

just thought you guys might like a look at this thing...
began as a surplus police issue 681 4 inch square butt...
Mark Hartshorne over at pinnacle performance
www.pinnacle-guns.com agreed to work on it for me and
it got a 7 shot cylinder fitted and timed in, cylinder modified for moonclips
( see www.moonclips.com ), partially bobbed hammer, rounded and smoothed trigger, frame modified to round butt, barrel cut to 3 inch with fiber optic front sight, barrel muzzle and crown recut, barrel contoured, frame
sight channel recut a bit, frame and barrel bead blasted and cylinder polished, general smithing work with barrel-cylinder gap, end shake, cylinder alignment, carry-up, etc all nice and tight and correct...and a pair of miculek grips. Needless to say I'd recommend Mark for any pistolsmithing you guys might require...

I have a number of 686s and would like to buy a 681. Seeing what you had done to your 681 gets my mind racing.

Thats a very nice L frame S & W revolver allot of excellent work done there!
Done in good taste with smooth flowing lines from the grips and bobbed hammer to the barrel and muzzle, if only that factory would make them this nice.
One of my old instructors served 30 years as a PD Sgt and dept. gunsmith he always told me a good combat wheelgun should balance like an extension of your hand and feel like a well used bar of soap as in no sharp edges.
Looks like you have a masterpiece to be very proud of thanks for the pic it made my day.

the pistol shoots very well...
Mark (who built it up)
tells me he took it to his gun club
and competed with it and won
that day's shoot...he could
not resist trying out his
handiwork and I encouraged him
to give it a spin to see how it would work.
Of course a good part of his win was
not the gun I am sure!
Only thing is you can pick your color
on fiber optics some might not want the green I got.

I am sure Mark could do same sort of thing with
your 686..and a 686P would allow you a 7 shot
to start with! no need to buy and get a new cylinder
and extractor. Mention the 3 inch 7 shot 681 he did for the OKie
and I am sure Mark will remember it and tell him what you like
and what you want different and bet he'll get it done for you.

Very nice sixgun! If I can find another nice 681, I'd like to get something like that done. The 681 in any form, is one of my favorite revolvers. In fact, IMHO the 7-shot PC 681 is probably the ultimate combat revolver. TJ

I really like Mark's work, he has done a few for me including my 642 to 942 conversion(38 to 9mm with a 940 cylinder) and redid my 65 to a pencil barrel. I would like to find a 581 and do about the same thing as yours.
