I have been thinking of getting a wildcat round to play with. I was hoping to find something in 6mm that would make 4000 fps. So far i havent found anything is there something i am missing?

I have a model 700 now in 243winchester and they say u can get the 55gr bullets up to 4000 but i have never been able to get them to shoot accurate. Not sure why i just would like to have a 4000 fps 6mm, would a different twist rate barrel on my 243 fix my problem.

6mm/244 Remington will do it with a 55 Gr. So will a .243 Winchester Super Short Magnum.

Neither of those is wildcat though. The 6mm/244 Remington is a 7x57 or 8x57 if you prefer Mauser case necked down to 6mm

BTW...the 244 Remington came out with a slower twist rate for lighter bullets, it didn't sell, so they brought it back as the 6mm with a faster twist for heavier bullets

.244 remington, .243wssm, 6-06, 6-.284, .240wby should all do 4k with the right loads and a long good quality barrel.

I might give it another try. I just want a 4000fps rifle and i love the 6mm and already have a lot of bullets to reload for it.

check out the 6 Crusader... pretty fast even with 115 DTACs ...not as fast as you want, but still accurate

I can average a little over 3900 fps with a 75 grain bullet using a .25-06 from a model 700.

a really long tube might get the .243 over 4k with 55s. Ive seen some loads that quick from pressure barrels, but fastest i can drive 65s is in the 3650-3700 range out of my 22.

barrels get burned up

Ahhh... just curious. I was wondering if it was like the "1,000 yd." thing -- an arbitrary goal based solely on our fondness for round numbers -- or if there was a phenomenon of performance that was obtained when exceeding that specific velocity (at the muzzle, at least).

I was just kidding, although the .243 is already considered a little overbore. I don't think I would want to be shooting several boxes of ammo in an hour on a P-Dog town with a 6mm pushing 55 gr. @ 4000fps.

I remember reading an article in one of the gun rags about the muzzle velocity race in the late 60's/early 70's and how the .17 Remington came out and all the gun writers were drooling over it's sheer speed.

Kidding? Naaah, there are some real burners out there. .243 probably not the worst.

I've got a pal with a 6mm-'06 Improved wildcat something or other. That one's not expected to live a long life. But I'll bet 4,000 fps isn't too hard to hit with it.

And somehow it still became a niche cartridge with a small following. I love it, though.

The .17 Rem and .204 Ruger don't have the barrel burning problem of the larger super-fast rounds, though. They go over 4k with a relatively small charge.

It's not, but that's also not really the point of the 6mm-06AI, IMO. It's like the Ultra mags, meant to push heavy-for-caliber bullets at very respectable velocities. 55's in a 6mm-06AI would be like running 125's in a .300 RUM.
