Hey guys, i want to put together a 6mm-06, just for fun and because i can. I understand that the barrel will wear out pretty fast (less than 1k rounds). While ive been shooting for a while, and am not new to reloading, I am new to building a wildcat or reloading for a wildcat (different section i know)

my questions are

First, would the 6mm-06 be as simple as buying a savage .25-06 and buying a 6mm (.243?) barrel and having my gunsmith headspace it?

second... when i reload this round...

I would have to get a 6mm-06 full length sizing die (?)... and use a .243 bullet seating die...

is all this correct?

im pretty sure any of the 06 family of cartridges can be used with nothing more then a barrel change and the chamber being cut and spaced. You know...id take a look at the .240 Gibbs if it was me, just a thought tho. It would take a bit more work to make gibbs cases

Either Hornady, or RCBS....or a number of other companys actually, would be able to set you up with a full die set. Id probobly form from .25-06 brass.

"...less than 1k rounds..." Highly unlikely. A Speer 105 grain SP bullet is moving at about the same velocities as a 90 or 95 grain .243 Win. Depending on the powder.
"...(.243?)..." Yep. You'll need a long action using any .30-06 based cartridge. Doesn't have to be a .25-06.
"...a .243 bullet seating die..." Too short. The .243 is based on the .308. It appears that only RCBS makes die sets. Midway wants $142.99 for 'em. Midway isn't the least expensive source though.

Pretty much all the reloading die manufactures will make custom dies, RCBs and Hornady, are the ones i hear about the most. Id give them a call, you never know they might actualy have some in stock lol.

depends on if you get a short chambered barrel then 75-150 would be as much as i was willing to spend, if it has to be fully reamed then 150 is probobly an ok deal.

I'm not trying to talk you out of the 6mm-06, but another option is the 6mm-284.
Lee makes Pacesetter dies for the 6mm-284, and it can easily be formed from 6.5-284 Norma brass.
Ballistics for the 6mm-06 and 6mm-284 are nearly identical. The 6mm-284 will work in a short action.

So it's expensive dies and fairly cheap brass for the 6mm-06, or cheaper dies and a bit more expensive brass for the 6mm-284.

I have the Lee dies and the reamer for 6mm-284, as well as a blank A&B 6mm barrel and a couple good Mauser actions to choose from.
I just have to get the gumption to thread the barrel on my lathe and get things together. One of these days.

www.hodgdon.com has loading data for the 6mm-284 on their site.

cool gun. I just built a 6.5-06 AI you can get dies from rcbs just call them or the best deal out there I think is warner go to there site and call that's a custom set for 200 I would only neck size to get full life out of your brass. 25-06 will work just fine. but I have to ask why the 6mm instead of the 6:5mm ? and as far as building it just buy a blank, stock, trigger and take it to your gunsmith. make sure he laps the lugs and trues the action . And now you have your dream rifle .
