Showing up late for the game, I just purchased a K31. Stock is so-so but the bore is unbelievably shiny, and all other metallic surfaces are in great shape. My question, what are the websites with the best prices on 7.5x55 ammo? Also, who is selling the scope mounts for this rifle? I believe that I am going to want the mount that will have to be drilled and tapped. I don't have a lot of confidence in the other mounts. Any info on ammo/mounts will be greatly appreciated. And if any of you reloaders out there have a good recipe to wring the most accuracy out of this little jewel, I would be forever in your debt.

Also a heads up, if you have access to a Dunhams sporting goods they have the K31's for 99.95. They also are having a pretty good sale on all other surplus guns and ammo now.

Ammo-

GP11 is pretty mutch match grade mil surp - AIM , SOG etc almost every surplus and ammo place carries it, prices don't vary that mutch on it...

Regarding scopes for a K-31, I bought a "Darrel's Scout Scope Mount." Here's the website: http://p077.ezboard.com/fparallaxscurioandrelicfirearmsforumsfrm85

It replaces the rear sight. Its a good mount. No gunsmithing, easy to take off and put back your regular rear sight if you want to.

And it made me quite a convert to the scout scope concept. So if you are not locked into a traditional scope, take a look.

Wolf is going to start producing ammo for the 7.5x55 Swiss K-31. This is supposed to take place with in the next month. Of couse it will be a while before it trickles down to the local gun shops. Of course it probably won't be the same grade as the G-11 but should be great for plinking at a lower price.

The D&T mount is actually the least popular mount for the K31. The clamp on mount is very rigid and doesn't require drilling of the very hard receiver. Both the D&T and the clamp on mounts are offset from the receiver centerline. As was mentioned, the scout mount is also very popular, doesn't require drilling and mounts on the centerline of the bore.

There are some pictures here on Gunboards that shows how the clamp on mount works.

I have the clamp-on mount and it is solid. It does not mar the finish either, it is well-engineered. It's actually a copy of a mount that's made in Europe which sells for like $300. I think Brownell's sells it for $100 so it is also pretty much the most expensive mount. The nice thing about it is that it's a normal eye-relief mount. The scout mount takes long eye-relief scopes like pistol scopes.

Thanks for the good info guys. Between yourselves and a special shout out to Darth Ruger, I'm going to go for one of Darrell's mounts. Hopefully we'll get a good range report out of this.

Yeah, I have a Darrel's mount on one of my k31s and it is solid. Wearing a burris scout fixed 2.75x, and millett rings (extensions rings were needed with that mount and that scope, to get the scope far enough forward to be able to use stripper clips). But that mount is a bit of a pain to get it set at the correct angle - 'boresighted'.

Crosshair. I'm gonna do something a little mean. I'm gonna tell you how much fun it is to have a scout scope mounted on that straight-pull K-31. With just a little practice, you can set up 6 clay pigeons at 100 yards, and break 'em all in under 10 seconds. Fast target acquisition with the scout scope, fast cycling with the straight pull action.

That's a lotta fun.

any of you reloaders out there have a good recipe

I got a 10 shot, 1-hole group at 100yds w/ iron sights with 42.0gr IMR-4064 and WLR primers, Graf cases, Rem 168gr CoreLokt. That's the best I've gotten so far. Overall a 1 1/8" give or take group, with a hot barrel, had to work fast that day. Lack of a cheap brass supply has kept me working on other things. Tried some H335 I had around and went to about 1.5" groups.

Not sure its the 'most' accurate, as it was intended to be a low-cost hunting load, but I get occasional cloverleafs with it.

.284Win case (resized & trimmed)
CCI 250(?) Magnum primer
43gr. H335
Sierra 150gr. GameKing.

Can't remember the OAL, but its just off the lands in my rifle.

There's a lot of good reloading info at www.swissrifles.com. People there tend to favor the 175gr. Sierra MatchKing(?) because its weight and profile are pretty similar to GP-11. IMR 4064 tends to be the preferred powder. I just like H335.

Well there's my problem...I stopped at 42.0 grains H335 ;)

Using 42.0gr I got 1.912" 5 shot offhand groups and 150gr M2 ball surplus bullets. My one-hole group ( 1.119" for 10 shots) was 40.0gr IMR-4064, not 42.0, I double checked.

I seat my bullets to 2.305", base to ogive. That was about .001-.003" off the lands, and since I measure to ogive, I can seat any bullet to this depth and get max accuracy, no matter the profile.

Measure the Ogive with a Stoney Point bullet comparator. Little guage device that clamps onto your calipers. Really handy.

As for loads, the best I have seen for the K-31 is the following:

44 gr. of 4064 pushing a 168gr. Nosler Custom Competition (or SMK, your choice). I use Win 284 cases and CCI BR primers. Seat about .010" off your lands and have at it.

My scoped K31 shoots well under MOA with this load.

Well I dont have the Stoney Point doohickey, but I've seen it around. I like the one from Sinclair Int that is a big hex nut with ogive size holes machined into the sides. But I dont know any machinist. So I do it the free way...

The 7.5 Swiss is a .30 cal bullet, so I set my caliper to .300" and rub a sharpie along the bullet near where the ogive should be. Stick the bullet in the caliper and turn it to lightly etch a line into the ogive. Then adjust your seating die to seat the bullet to the proper ogive length. Hope that makes sense :)

Read an article on it once and it worked, so until I decide to spend $15-20 on a nut with a hole in it, it's what I'm gonna use. LOL

Great technique. I'm gonna try it. This is why I love THR. Always learnin' something.

For prices on 7.5x55 ammo, about the best I've found so far is Midway which sells 60 rd boxes for $20 (if you have the dealer discount).

The hubby and I have been working up some loads to see which work best through our K31s. (Beware: you'll probably end up purchasing more than just one!)

We've taken it from 41-45 gr of 4064 and so far the 44 gr has worked best with the 150 gr Sierra...crap, can't remember the details. But we're going to try a slightly heavier bullet next time out and see how that affects accuracy. Oh, that's with .284 brass and plain ol' Winchester large rifle primers.

I suggest working up some different loads to see which work the best out of your rifle. I remember that we used a different bullet type/manufacture too (can't remember which) that had better results with a different powder measure. I don't think there's a magic recipe out there. Just a better one given a certain set of variables.

I called the ATF and they say that they have a backlog of applications. After over 3 months and they havn't gotten to mine yet. I think i'm going to just pay the $10 transfer fee and get one from the local FFL.

FYI,

Grafs is selling Hornady Custom Rifle 165gr. BTSP 7.5x55 at $16.47/20rd box (dealer price for C&R / FFL holders once you set up an account). I just picked up a case to have nice loaded hunting ammo on hand for my 2 K31s and for the nice reloadable brass. I have about 300rds of GP11 brass now too, but I haven't got around to processing it. To me, this "loaded Hornady" option seemed to be the best way to get reloadable brass since it's otherwise so hard to find...and this Hornady stuff is generally MUCH more expensive.
