Greetings,

I am relaoding 7.62NATO (308Winchester) 150gr FMJ PRVI bullets with Ramshot TAC into Winchester 308 cases. :D

I am reloading for my Enfield Ishapore 2A that I never shot before. :what:

Ramshot manual has those 2 loads:
HDY SP 41.9-46.5 max PSI 57,500
SIE HPBT 42.3-47 max PSI 58,900

I know 7.62NATO is 50k PSI. And I know (from here) a bunch of guys shoot commercial 308Winchester in their Ishy.

Does it make sense to begin with a starting load of 42.5 grains and work it up or should I start with a lower charge?

Thank you

Had Same Experience

I often have similar quandaries. I usually back off 10% for the first rounds in a newly acquired service rifle.

Unless I know the previous owner, I do a through cleaning and inspection and then strap it to the bench rest and trigger it with a string for the first few rounds and check the barrel for heat. I've never had a problem but I still do it.

Hope this helps.

The Ishy is not as strong as a modern bolt gun, by any measure. I usually ran starting 308 loads in mine, and never had cause to want more blast and flash.

My load for 308 in Ishy's or CETMEs was 40gr TAC under a 147gr/150gr FMJ or 150gr SP. I don't think that 42.5gr will be an issue, but I wasn't looking for maximum velocity and 40gr was an economical load for practicing and hunting within the practical ranges of the Ishy sights.

I run 42.5g of TAC for both my Ishy and my FAL with 147g fmj surplus. Decent accuracy, never any pressure signs. I have gone as far as 46g, but 42.5 seems to give best consistancy. Meters well on my progressive, also.
