7.62x39 Ackley Improved (30 PPC)

Would it make 150 gr bullets get more velocity? That’s the main thing I could see improving. Even then, you’re getting a louder, bolt action 30-30.

Maybe not much real world benefit, but fun projects are also worth something.

No, not at this time. This is just a thought project right now. Actually think that shooting some of the Lapua ammo and working up higher pressure loads will be enough to satisfy my needs. Got to my lathe and turned an accurate size 7.62x39 AI bullet clone. Still like the way they look.
I envy your talent.

Can you elaborate on the build? I have some Fireball brass I’d like to put to use.
Just took a Ruger American ranch in 300 blackout (which has 221fb as a parent case) and had shaw make me an American prethreaded pre chambered barrel. The American is a barrel nut rifle, so swapping barrels is easy as a savage. I used the old rotary magazine stock since it'll feed the 221 decently, but the AR mags don't in stock form. I want to build Mauser style bottom metal for it eventually, but for now the Ruger rotary mags are my friend. I may 3d print a straight mag for it too.

I do believe that the 6.5 Grendels mag would be about right for a blown out x39 case. I really like the idea, just might be expensive for no real gains. Custom dies aren't cheap.

Have not thought about the 150s yet, was planning on using 125s for deer hunting here in Eastern North Carolina. Deer are smaller here than other places I have hunted, Louisiana, Mississippi and Missouri. For the deer here 150s out of a 308 shoot completely through and put a lot of energy into the woods on the other side. Thanks for joining in on this project.

Had not thought about that, but what a cool idea. Thanks! I’ve handled the RAR but don’t own one. Saw the G2 rifles are coming out, thought for the price I could pick up one to bang around with.

My step son has a 300 in an AR, so I’ve got plenty of experience with that. Curious as to the x39 in a bolt gun performance wise. But I have a stash of 500 FB brass that I’d prefer to put to use somehow.

I have a cz527 in 7.62x39( lower rifle in my avatar), and it is so much fun you wouldn't believe it! I think there is room for both the 300 blk and x39 in the stable, they do a lot of the same work, but different enough, and pure joy in a bolt gun.

Yes I know about them not being cheap, have Clymer reamers in 223 AI, 30-30 AI and 357 Maximum

The 30-30 AI has always intrigued me. Any real world information you could give me about your experience with is would be much appreciated.
Ok, here goes, if I get too long winded let me know. Started this project with a NEF Handy Rifle. Reworked the trigger down to 1lb.12oz. Lapped the barrel with tight patches on a jag and Clover brand 220 grit lapping compound. Put a dab of compound on the patch and ran it through 10 times, then brass brush with solvent. Ran patches till they came out clean then repeat. Again and again and again and again you get the picture. After 100 runs through, clean the barrel and do it again some other day. Several hundred lapping passes got it where I wanted it. Chucked barrel into lathe and rechambered. Fireformed new Winchester brass and started loading 150 gr. Hornady flat base bullets. Chronographed 10 shot average at 2734 fps. No pressure signs, no flattened primers. Considering Lyman #45 gives a maximum speed for 150 gr in a standard 30-30 of 2460 fps. Showes a nice improvement. Accuracy also greatly improved. Shot off bench with a Burris fixed 6x scope. For sizing I used a Hornady 30 cal. Neck sizing die and turned a sleeve to fit Bonanza bench rest seating die reamed with same reamer. All are 10 shot targets. One of the targets I shot seven bullets and made sight adjustment to center target.

How did we get from the theme of this thread, which is 7.62x39, to 30-30 Win? I was about to do a brain dump on 7.62x39, but... nah. Better I start another thread about 7.62x39 in the future, and make sure it stays on topic. There's so much to know about 7.62x39 the most people don't. The vast majority don't.

PS: 30-30 can't hold a candle to the real-world potential of 7.62x39 that's available right now. No "Ackley improved" needed.

Well educate the masses then...

It'll just get lost. Better I start a thread about x39 when I get some time. All the pertinent info will be in my opening post. That's the best way me thinks.
I would be very interested in reading it, I'm seriously not being a booty hole either, I really like the x39 cartridge and I want to learn all I can about anything I'm interested in.
