Hi folks, I would like to start reloading for my SKS and I need some pointers on which dies to get, I will be reloading these on a RCBS Rockchucker press. One thing I'm confused about is what type of crimp ? will a taper crimp work with cannelured bullets ? I'm not sure what bullets I will use so I'm looking for the most practical for now. Thanks jj

I personally use Hornady dies to load for my SKS and CZ550 carbine. The crimp they provide is more than adequate for the recoil that the round generates in the SKS, and moreover the CZ550 carbine which recoils more in the 270/30-06 class due to its 6 lb weight. Hornady dies (as do all I believe) come with both the .308 and .310" diameter expanders.
My 7.62 load (for both) consists of close to a max load of AA2015BR (cant remember the exact weight--Im at work and cant check) winchester cases, CCI standard primers behind either a Hornady .310 123 grain interlock or .310 123 grain Vmax. In both guns, either load is interchangable and hit at the same point of impact. The CZ is a genuine, repeatable 1" gun at 100 yards with 3 shots using a Burris 4x20 short mag... the SKS with open sights will consistantly strike within a 3-4" circle @ 100, if I do my part.

I use the Lee factory crimp on my 7.62X39 loads. don't try to squeeze the guts out of the slug just a firm snug crimp. try some 150 gr. slugs, my M30 likes 'em.

I use the Lee die set with the FCD, and have no complaints.
They're all good, pick one. Me, I like Redding bushing dies for adjustable neck tension and the Lee FCD.
I would suggest that you invest in a Lee FCD. It will keep the bullets in place during the cycling of the action, not for recoil as many believe. When that round is hammered into the chamber and comes to a sudden stop the bullet can and does move forward. If your neck tension is loose enough the bullet can actually come all the way out of the neck. Then you have a nice mess of powder everywhere in your chamber and rifle.

Or worse, when the bullet hits the feed ramp it is driven back into the case. That can cause pressure problems!
Having bullets slip out of the case when they chamber indicates your expanding plug is too big!
If I were loading for any semi-auto rifle, I use the Lee FCD on them for a secure crimp that will not buckle shoulders, or allow bullet set-back.

The best thing you can do with the Lee dies is to size with the .308 expander and then gently bell the mouth with a partial stroke on the .311. Ths keeps the neck tension on the bullet. I had some bullets that couldn't maintain a set depth if I expanded with the .311, and it was a bit tight to put them into the .308 without flaring it a bit first.
I had to call Redding for a replacement expander ball for my 7.62x39mm dies and requested both .308 and .311, they said the standard expander for their 7.62x39mm dies is the .308 one, they shipped it to me for free! I haven't loaded enough of these to provide any advice on crimping though.

I use the Lee Pacesetter 3-Die Set has produced very accurate realods for me.

Do I understand you to say that you don't lube your bottleneck rifle cases using the Dillon carbide dies? The straight wall pistol cases with the little carbide ring for sizing I understand, but the full length sizing, bottleneck, carbide dies still require lubrication according to Dillon at least.
I recommend the Lee 3 die set. Inexpensive and load great ammo. Easy bullet seating depth adjustments also. The FCD is a great invention.
Wow! Really? I was thinking of buying one of these little rifles. It kicks like a 30-06?
