I have been reloading 45acp using Berry bullets and a taper crimp. I have the RCBS 3 die set and it is working great. I intend to buy some lead bullets on line which appear to have a cannelure. Will I need to start roll crimping the lead bullets because they have a cannelure or can I continue to taper crimp?

You never use a roll-crimp on any auto pistol cartridge.
They all headspace on the case mouth, and they can't if you roll crimp them.

The only exception would be for use in a revolver with moon-clips controling the headspace.

Point of info: The crimp groove on a cast lead bullet is called the crimp groove.
Cannelure is the term used for the knurled ring rolled into a jacketed bullet to crimp in.

Learn something new everyday.

I didn't know that the term cannelure only referred to jacketed/plated bullets.
Like Hornady XTP (jacketed) & HSM plated.

So if I understand this correclty. I will seat and crimp a 45 acp lead cast bullet the same way I do for a FMJ bullet.

Yes.

Zactly the same.
Seat & taper-crimp it so the case mouth measures in the vicinity of .469", to no more then .471".

rcmodel-- thanks. that makes things much easier than I originally thought.
As you can gather I am not only new to this forum but also new to shooting and reloading. really appreciate your input.

I should have added, if your revolver bullets with the crimp groove seat even with the case mouth, it will leave a gap the taper-crimp won't touch.

Seat either more or less to miss the crimp groove so you can crimp on solid bullet.

rc, are you sure a 45acp revolver headspaces on a moon clip? just doesn't sound right. thought all 45acp headspaces on the rim.

Depends on which 45 ACP revolver you have the S & W uses moon clips,Rugers 45 ACP revolver head spaces on the case mouth. My Ruger 9mm revolver head spaces off the case mouth, the cylinder is cut the same as a 9mm semi-auto chamber.

When loading 45 ACP ammo for a revolver load I would load it the same way you would for a semi-auto,this allows you to shoot the ammo in both type guns. You don't need a bullet with a cannelure or crimp groove but you can use one, those type bullets will generally be used for pistol cases that headspace on the rim.

Here is a good video on the subject.

yah, i meant case mouth, not rim. rimless cases headspace on the case mouth, right? thanks for reminding me, res45.

Some S&W 25s or 625s weren't made quite to spec and had to have the moon clips to work..American Handgunner did an article on this phenomenon a number of years ago. I have not seen one myself, but do believe they're out there.
Mine works nicely with either moons or without and is also quite accurate with 45 ARs.

Seat, taper crimp, shoot and enjoy.

A .45 ACP doesn't have a rim. They headspace off the case mouth normally.

If you read my post again, you will see I said they would have to headspace off the moon-clip if you used a roll crimp on them.

Yes, a lot of the new 625 MIM wonders from S&W are chambered with excess headspace, and are not 100% reliable without moon-clips, or .45 AR cases.
I have a 625-6 Mountain Gun like that.
And my buddy has a 625JM the same way.

Prior to that, beginning with the Model 1917, S&W chambered them correctly to headspace on the chamber step just like a 1911 barrel.
But not anymore.
