I have a Hakim I picked up just for the curiosity of it back in about 1990 when they were on the market. I gave eighty bucks for it. It's a HUGE, heavy rifle with next to no recoil, but my God, I cannot imagine having to tote this thing in battle, ROFL! I have a bayonet for it, too, just for kicks. It's fun to shoot. I buy the old 8mm corrosive stuff and clean it with military powder solvent and scrub things after every session with it. I haven't shot it in years, though. It's sort of a wall hanger.
It won't get your thumb unless you stick it in there before closing the action...
I don't use stripper clips, just pull the magazine to load, safer. You can't do that with an M1. It is a very odd gas impingement action that is fun to show the uninitiated. It's also a friggin' cannon at the range. It has this recoil suppressor on it that makes it impressive to bystanders when it goes off, enough gas blowing back that I blew the hat off a shooter's head sitting beside me at a bench once when I fired it.
I had got to a range with some guys from work. One of the guys had an Uzi and was rattling off at a 50 yard target with it. Well, I sat down with the Hakim and fired off 10 as fast as I could, sounded like a ma deuce compared to a M16.
All eyes turned to the Hakim after that.
It's a fun gun for that sort of thing, but absolutely useless for any real world application. But, for 80 bucks, hell, why not? The only thing I regret is not having bought a Rashid when they were on the market. Not that it's a great gun or anything, but it's more rare than the Hakim, same action, smaller, and chambered for 7.62x39.
I suppose if money is no object, you could get a dragunov.
