RK, I'm not trying to be pushy, as it is of course your decision, but I just don't see the logic of some people in NOT recommending you buy a firearm that is going to be banned in three months! :scrutiny:

I purchased my Serbu from a private individual.

He may have another for sale, but for around $2K.

Email me for more info about my dealer if you like.

I can't believe only THREE people voted for the Serbu. Apparently the 1.2 million threads we had about AB 50 were overlooked.
Although AB50 is perhaps one of the most comeletely pointless and stupid pieces of legislature in US history, I could really care less about 50 Caliber rifles. If you've got an extra thousand dollars just lying around- that's great. Get a Serbu receiver. But IMO, there are a lot more useful and practical guns out there (some of which may be banned in the future as well).

I'd say get a Mini-14 or an SU-16. I like the Mini-14 better, simply because it feels more solid.

Another vote for the Serbu here. As soon as I can scrape $1000 together, I'm grabbing one.

Failing that...

A DPMS lower (or two) and an SU-16. You can use all those full-capacity AR-15 mags you bought before they were banned (because you knew you were someday going to have an AR-pattern weapon, right?)

The M1A would be nice. Very nice. I don't know if I can justify the cost at the moment, though...if someone would come out with an $800 M-14 pattern weapon, they'd sell thousands of them here.

Meet your goal

My priorities are for general plinking and SHTF.

If I had $5,000 to play with, I'd get a .50 BMG too. But it certainly doesn't fit into your primary purposes.

I just bought a Yugo SKS (still on my 10 day :fire: ). Figure about $250, and several spam cans of surplus ammo, and you are set. Granted, for SHTF, an SKS is not as desirable as a mag loader, but it IS California; besides, from what I've heard, the new Yugo muzzle break the state insists on makes handling even better.

Some interesting concepts here.....

But the .50 rifle? Well, OK it may be hard to get later, and you could resell it once it was banned for a large profit. But for a GP plinking/SHTF rifle? It is a specialty weapon, and there cannot be that many places you can shoot it. Ammo is certainly not cheap! And I am not sure you can use it for more than target practise.
The M1A IS nice, but they are heavy as is the ammo and over penerative at close range. Though the Squad Scout does interest me alot! I would be tempted to get one of these, especially if I 'happened' to have a few 20 rounder's for 'way back when'.
If I was wearing your shoes(and I am not), I'd get the SU-16(cause you have some good mags for SHTF), the 5.56 goes out quite aways accurately and with the lighter frangible rounds you can do close quarters without penetration worries. It SU is reportedly an accurate, reliable firearm, light in weight and handy. Throw on a reddot and a surefire, buy more mags and ammo and you have a tool that'll do what you need done.
Might even have enough for an SKS, which makes a nice second rifle that trows a heavier, larger bullet for brush work(I'd try and find a Paratrooper with the shorter barrel, IF that is approved in Kaliforniastan).
I was pondering a move to CA for an upgrade in employment, but that might get postphoned for a bit. However, I had already given my Kali rifle some thought and would get the pair I mentioned above.
Now, while still in Vegas...I have decided to get a Bulgie SLR-95 and upgrade it to a mini-galil kinda tool.....If I move to Kali, it'll get sent to a midwest gunsafe(as will one or two 1911 .45 autos) to protect it from the hands of politicians.

Don't buy a .50 BMG in California for investment purposes. They won't be transferable within the state after this year. Buy one for making really big holes in targets.

But the .50 rifle? Well, OK it may be hard to get later, and you could resell it once it was banned for a large profit.

Everybody,

Thank you so much for all the great replies and advice.

I've decided to get the SU-16 along with a DPMS lower receiver to be made into a .50 cal at a later date and a 1000 rd. case of .223.

Thanks again for the help!

I said other for the FAB-10, but then realized that it wasn't a .223 thread, but an any semi-auto. I would say SKS and a ton of ammo or save up and get an M1A while you still can. You also have the Garand as well.

Quote: "That's a single shot DPMS lower, right???"

Actually, you can still buy a semi-auto as long as the magazine is not detachable. Barrett makes a semi auto 50 that has a magazine on a hinge just for Kalifornicate. There are two, count em, two left for retail sale.

And I can tell you who has em, too.
