Hey guys, I'm pretty new to this site and gun ownership in general.
I own a 1943 Izhevsk Mosin 91/59 and I love it. It has power, it's accurate, and cheap to feed but I'm looking for a SHTF weapon most likely a Romanian PSL.
My question is, would it be possible to get a shortened version?
I like the psl but it's a bit too long for me.
What kind of options do I have as far as shortning the weapon?

Arizona, thankfully ;-)
I guess I was curious about if this has been done succesfully and what it would look like.

I checked it out... Pretty awesome looking.
Think I'll wait till these have been on the market awhile.
Thanks guys.

Waffen Werks makes "Dragunov carbine" that I've seen on Atlantic Firearms. That sounds pretty close to what you're looking for and it's not an SBR (so no $200 tax required). For what it's worth, I had a very good experience purchasing from Atlantic earlier this year. You can probably contact Waffen Werks and see if otehr places are selling it as well.

I saw a video of a full-auto version just now. It looked freakin brutal!!!
I'm getting one lol.
It's an awesome cartridge. Gotta love the 54r :)

The "Dragunov Paratrooper" or PSL carbines are, from hearsay, as reliable as the normal ones, comparably accurate, kick harder, and are godawful loud. Several of my friends are either buying or building 'em with various ill intentions in mind, mostly involving normal AK pistol-grip-and-buttstock furniture and or rails.

I think I would rather go with an AK 54r. I've never owned one or a psl for that matter, hell, I've never even fired either one of them but I think AK54r would be a damn good battle rifle.

PSL is a LONG heavy beast. Add to that from what people say you have to take care on what you feed it as it will hammer itself to death with anything more then 150 grain.

They are getting to be hard to find and the price seems to be going up on them.

All that said it is the most fun 54R rifle that I own.

Atlantic,

I would like to see some 20" Vepr's in 308. or 7.62X54
It would also be nice to have a black handguard option (the Ace block takes care of the rear)
ETA I love the website I want to buy about everything I look at!

That is why most reputable dealers will tell you to buy/use only the light ball ammo. It is surplus and some of the least expensive anyway.

I love mine (probably to death) Shoots great and very accurate as long as you shoot it as designed (slowly and a few rounds at a time). Go figure something that works as designed and does not do as well when abused:eek:

I bought a FPK Paratrooper from Southern Ohio Guns about 6 years ago.
They were imported by Tennessee Guns.

Basically a PSL with a 18" barrel.
Kicks about like an AK, Loud as hell, and lots of fun to shoot.
Mine's fairly accurate and very handy 36" overall length, 1" longer than an AK w/Flash Hider.

The only complaint I have is that the gas tube was also shortened so finding a spare will be difficult.

A Gunsmith could shorten any PSL barrel to around 19" w/o messing with the gas tube.

Here's mine with it's Big Brother.

The SVT-40 is better, IMO, having actually been proven by WW2, but the prices of the guns, mags, and accessories are through the roof. They're honestly great rifles which are reliable, practical, and a joy to shoot. I personally was never a great fan of the PSL, but after I got my hands on an SVT, I could never consider them.

SVT-40 and a PSL are very different, I own both. And right now the prices are about the same for both rifles in my area. I like both rifles but they are just not even close to the same. Personally I will not fire surplus (corrosive) ammo in eather rifle. And now that Prvi Partizan makes 54R in 150gr there is no reason to, and it will give you nice reloadable brass. (if you can find it both my rifles love to toss the brass)

The OP was looking for a SHTF type weapon and I don't think that a SVT40 will work well for that...I am not sure that a PSL would be the best choice for something like that. These are both bits of history (the SVT more so) and it is a rifle that takes some care to keep happy. If you are looking for a weapon to head for the hills with I would look at one of the M1 scout squad type rifles...nice big full power rifle round, shorter.... but around $500 more then both the PSL or the SVT.
