...i read through some other posts about this and didnt find what i was looking for....

went to a shop today, saw mosin fmj ammo in construction paper kind of wrap with twine, and the rounds looked to be all brass, maybe copper washed? anyways it was all the same color, but the tip was yellow.

so i figured, surplus. but the owner said it was new manufacture russian stuff and it just came packaged that way. $7 for 20. if its new and not corrosive, id buy it, if its milsurp ill just buy in bulk of the net and save my money.

i bought this other stuff, 203 gr sp with a lacquered steel case that he said was also new, it was in a beat up box, but still wrapped in construction paper.

any ideas on if either of these is corrosive? does the new stuff come wrapped in that paper too?

thanks

ammo

The rounds you brought are diffinitely surplus it sounds like the yellow tip, which is most likely machine gun ammo. it will still work jusk alot of kick.
i use it some time for people who want to try my gun.Check on line such as aim surplus ya can get chezh silver tip 3-400 rounds for 44.00 bucks. doesn't kick as hard and yes ya have to clean for corrosive ammo.
enjoy your new toy.

IT'S NOT CORROSIVE

That's Baurnal Brown Bear SP, new production.

you think the stuff i bought was brown bear? it didnt look anything like the box pictures on the internet. no bear. just a guy on the front with a rifle and some mountains in the background. but the rounds looked just like lacquered wolf stuff, so i figured it was new and non corrosive.

do all mosin rounds come in that wrap, like even wolf? is that standard procedure? and you think it was bear despite the box?

thanks for the help guys, im confident in all your replies

I'm with JediJJJ, sounds like the Bulgarian heavy ball. Stuff kicks like a mule out of an M44 with the steel plate.

If the case is brass its Bulgarian heavy ball, pretty common right now. I wouldn't pay more than $.15 a round. If It is copper washed steel it will probably be from Hungary and I believe it would still be heavy ball 1980's made. Either way it's fairly good quality. (very cheap on the interweb, just ask my closet)

203gr soft points are most likely Barnaul rounds, new production and non corrosive, Which are pretty pleasant to shoot compared to the Bulgarian Heavy ball.

Hope that helps:)

i know this isnt the handloading forum, but its pretty on topic...

can you reload the steel casings on the ammo i bought today, if you wanted to handload? they are apparently barnaul.

thanks
