I picked up some 7.62x54r ammo earlier today that was sold as non-corrosive and I'm wondering if anyone knows anything specific about it. It is headstamped 10/84. According to 7.62x54r.net 10/87 is corrosive Bulgarian. I only bought 2 packs (at 3x bulk rate) to try out so I won't feel too cheated, but I'd be interested to know for sure.

Ammo is 149(sticker) grain, steel cased, copper washed, and lacquer sealed at neck and primer. Looks identical to 10/87.

thanks

it's old eastern bloc surplus ammo right? so just treat it as corrosive anyway to be safe, spray some windex down your bore after your done shooting and clean the rifle good when you get home, no big deal really.

I've Shot some of that Stuff before. Its not really AS corrosive as some of the other east bloc stuff that will have your barrel rusting before you get home from the range, but I do recommend the windex thing. My 91/30 loved it, my polish m44 hated it. Then again my m44 hates all 7.62x54r 'cept the Hungarian heavy ball.

it is in fact exactly this from Century:

Product ID: Am1403
Bulgarian7.62x54RAmmo. Berdan Primed / Corrosive, Steel Cased 20rd/box 440rd/tin

looks like they opened a can. boxes are marked: lewciaam1403

I'm just a little disappointed in the store, never lied to me before, but they might not have known.

Thanks for your replies

Unless it is some of the newer brown/silver/gold bear, or new Wolf or "Prvi Partizan" (sp??) so marked as NON-Corrosive, clean your rifle as though the ammo IS corrosive...because it is.

No matter what the seller says....Soviet Bloc "Mil-Surp" ammo IS corrosive.

I don't usually make an all-inclusive sweeping statement like that...However, Soviet Bloc Mil-Surp ammo IS corrosive, except in very very rare cases.

When in doubt, clean it out. The only stuff I would take a "chance" on not being corrosive would be if the box said Sellier and Bellot, Winchester, Remington, or Wolf. On surplus and corrosive I'd rather clean it to be on the safe side then not clean it and rust/pit the bore.

Thanks again guys. My main concern here was whether or not the ammo justified the price; I probably wouldn't have only shot the 'new' stuff by itself and would need the windex anyway.
