Cpl Punishment, she is indeed a Longbranch, with a lefthand twist 6 groove barrel - it's a Bren barrel? Go figure.
Just had her at the range - used some quickie reloads to sight in the front sight, finally located the rare/expensive tool, used 174gr Hornady FMJ/BT, got 1 inch groups at 100 yards! Love this grand old dame!
Sorry, didn't mean to hijack the thread! The laquered cased Albania practically shatterd in the 91/30 I used it in, (before I had to sell it...dagnabbit), and the brass cased stuff gave inconsitant accuracy in the M38.
I still have about 10 of the plastic tip hollow core training ammo. 6 inch group at 100 yards, massive muzzle flash, zero recoil. 46 gr bullet doesn't push back that much!

whoa there, buddy. i don't think anybody meant to directly suggest that you were lying, only that MOS at 500 is pretty damn incredible. i for one want to know - what position are you using? How old are you? How often do you go shooting? How long have you been shooting? What ammo do you use... etc.

do tell so i might learn!

only because i'm pretty lousy with my milsurps. i love them all but nothing changes the fact that offhand i'd be lucky to put three shots on a dinner plate at FIFTY yards.

i guess i suck.

mind you, i've been shooting for 14 years.

eh, i guess i just suck.

Silverlance, I am a pretty low key guy, but the "online" vs. "firing line" comment really chapped my rear. Maybe I jumped to a conclusion, but it sounded to me pretty close to calling me a liar. If not, I apologize.

Now, I am pretty much going offhand or sitting this time of year, because my range is tall with CRP grass and in the prone I cannot see my target. My sitting position is a pretty strongly supported position with both elbows locked in front of my knees, legs crossed, with some back pressure on my elbows. This position leans you way forward, but is rock steady (and uncomfortable).

I shoot at least once weekly on a private range on the farm where I grew up and hunted.

I am a terribly nearsighted guy with glasses in his mid thirties, with just enough paunch that I am working on losing, because the above mentioned position is tough with a gut.

I shoot at least once a week and pretty much have since I was a boy. I am not a guy that goes out and blows 400 rounds through an assault rifle during a range session, not that there is anything wrong with that, it is just not me. I focus on quality, not quantity of my trigger time. Today was somewhat of an exception in that I ran over 100 rounds through a service grade M-1 in the same position that I shot the M-38. I was simply in the zone and could not quit!

When shooting the M-38, I have very limited experience, I was shooting with good results some Wolf 148 gr. FMJ.

Heck, I don't think I have ever posted anything this long on here before. As I said, I am fairly low key.

Several years ago when the (full-size) Moisin's were first being imported in quantity, a friend bought two. We shot them at an old strip mine behind his house, using the hood of a Ford Econoline for a benchrest. I don't have a clue what ammo we were using, but my first three shots from this rifle were under 3" at 100 yds, about equal to my 1903 Springfield, with comparable recoil.
