Is there any surplus mosin ammo on the market that won't stick to a magnet? No steel core? or am I going to need to buy some 'brown bear' etc?

(brown bear isn't steel core, is it?)

Brown Bear cartridges will still stick to a magnet, since they have steel cases. You'll have to spring for premium brass-cased 7.62x54R in order for the cartridge to not stick to a magnet.

Or use a bullet puller and just wave the magnet over the bullet. ;) (I'm presuming this is some kind of range regulation that if the ammo attracts a magnet, you can't shoot it there).

The guys at the range are reasonable, and smart. I am pretty sure if I tell them it is just the steel case, they will attempt to position the magnet on JUST the bullet and see if there is any pull.

Can you confirm that brown bear bullets are lead core?

brown bear are lead core but have steel in them still... they're "bi-metal", which has steel in it. Usually a copper plated steel jacket.

For 7.62x39 and 54r lead core loaded ammo, fiocchi is probably the best deal you'll find. All of the cheaper stuff is bi-metal.

I'd buy some fiocchi and then start reloading it.

The indoor range I used to shoot at did not allow steel-jacketed or steel-cored bullets due to backstop damage. They did want to check my rifle ammo with a magnet, too, until I pointed out it was a .22. :D

ah ha! Well shoot, if you were still out here i'd say let's hit the range sometime, but TN is a ways away :D I do love TN though...

SGC is a great range, very much enjoy it there. Rio Salado also for longer range rifle shooting (winter only!)

Funny, I shoot at the Scottsdale Gun Club myself. Was out there last Saturday with my Makarov and P-64. Couldn't shoot my Silver Bear ammo, so I had to make do with my limited supply of S&B. I actually talked to a range employee about why they don't allow bimetal jackets. It's not due to fire hazard or backstop damage, because that range is rated for .50 BMG. It's because it gums up their cleaning auger when the jackets separate. They don't seem to care about steel casings, though. I think those are swept up manually.

I have some surplus ammo that is steel jacketed and lead core, also winchester has some 7.62 54R for sale its brass and copper jacket lead core.
