Hi All,
I just bought a bunch of GP11 to go out and fire my new K31, and I tested the ammo with a magnet and the bullet stuck to it. I guess that means it's steel-core or steel jacketed, right? So I'm looking for any range in SoCal that will allow me to shoot that ammo.
Thanks for any info you can give me.

Well, the range I'm a member of doesn't care about magnetic bullets. But the Inland Fish and Game out in Redlands might be a bit out of the way for you.

You might try Lytle Creek or West End Gun Club. Not sure if either of those are any closer to you.

Well since its fire season right now in So Cal you might be out of luck. The range I usually shoot at told me last week that after it rains and gets cooler they would allow people to shoot steel core ammo. I agree with ocabj, try Lytle Creek, they seem to be pretty permissive on what they allow.

Nic, be very, very careful about shooting that ammo when it's fire season. A long time ago I went to shoot some steel core out of an AK, one evening at dusk. On my own property in So Cal. Shot at a very large rock that was an occasional target. I couldn't believe the sparks that shot off that rock when hit. It was like a fireworks display. I stopped right then and there. I wasn't about to take the chance of starting a fire. (If it hadn't been getting dark I wouldn't have seen the sparks)

Now I'm not saying to not shoot the steel core. Just make sure that the backstop is dirt in a well cleared area. No dry brush or such close by. I'm sure you've seen the reports of recent fires being started by target shooters. That poor guy gets stuck with the bill for puting it out.

And if you don't mind a 700 mile drive, come on up to Humboldt County. Our range can handle that ammo.

Nic,
Most of the local ranges won't allow steel core period! They don't care if it's not fire season, most are on leased property from the Forestry dept. and don't want their lease pulled.

About the only place that I can think of is Lytle Creek for shooting steel core, I shoot at Angeles and they will kick you off the range if they catch you with steel core ammo.

One other option is to drive out to the desert.

I sent you a PM Nic. I do not want to get anyone at that range in trouble.
