I am thinking of purchasing a ruger 77/44 (44 magnum), most likely the stainless-synthetic version. This will be primarily a plinking rifle, secondarily a whitetail rifle. Does anyone out there have experience with the accuracy (or lack thereof)of this rifle?

I'm very curious about these as well and have posted a question twice that no one has answered. Third time's a charm, right? :D

I've read that the barrels of these rifles have a slow rate of twist and cannot stabilize a heavier bullet properly. In fact, I'd heard that a 240 gr. or so was about the limit.

As one of my reasons for being interested was the possibility of a hard-hitting, close-range, suppressed rifle, being able to shoot the heaviest bullets available would be a big plus because they'll need to be going pretty slow to stay sub-sonic.

Has anyone actually tried a 77/44 with 300+ gr. slugs? What results did you get?

those things are cute, but I bet they thump.
I handled one recently and it was like a 77/22 carbine with a bigger hole in the barrel.

We recommend an optional Douglas Match barrel in a special 11:1 twist rate for improved accuracy over the factory Ruger barrel when using subsonic loads. Engel Ballistic Research has developed a special subsonic 265 grain round for this rifle/barrel combination that typically delivers ~ MOA accuracy at 100 yards. The Douglas barrel can be chambered in either .44 Magnum or .44 Special, depending on your requirements.

Found this on the www.srtarms.com site. Very helpful!

If that's the Hornady XTP 265 gr. they're talking about, it's a great bullet! But I'm a bit concerned as I've read that XTPs are designed to expand well only at 1200 fps or so. Subsonic, they might not do as well. But, shucks, I'd be willing to test the theory out. You know, for the good of shooters everywhere. ;-)

Bill, will you guys be offering the same upgrade, and/or have you found such a change helpful?

Thanks!

-Sam
(P.S. -- It was nice meeting you at IDPA Nat's last year!)
