Hey all,
Sorry I have a newbie question - I am planning into getting into reloading and would like to experiment with downloading 7mm cartridges. I'm looking to choose between the 7mm-08 or the 7mm Mauser and was wondering which would be better for my purposes. I am looking to push a 140 grain projectile between 2400-2600 fps. There seems to be more reloading data on the 7mm Mauser at this velocity but I wanted to hear from the experts on their experiences! Rifle will be a T/C encore rifle, so all I have to do is buy a barrel :D Thanks all!!

The difference is slight for a handloader. For velocity go to the Mauser, it has a slightly greater capactiy. For accuracy the 7-08 should, on average, be a little bit better but even then it's likely to be too little to see in the field.

My first question would be why?

The velocities you specify aren't really "downloads" for either cartridge but are within the normal velocity parameters for each. If you are trying to get experience in downloading, try something like a 7mm Rem. Mag. that will really need downloading to keep the velocities down.

If you're trying to keep recoil low, go with the 7mm/08 since there is an excellent supply of brass and it's accuracy is legendary.

Thank you both for the replies!
Grumulkin, very good points! My reasons are two fold - as you noted, I am looking to reduce recoil, but I am also planning to test how the 7mm bullet would peform wound ballistics wise at lower (ie 2400 fps) velocities, perhaps even less to see its terminal effects at long range which will require true reduced loads.
It seems that the 7mm-08 will suit my purposes, since brass is easier to find and the two cartridges seem very similar except for size. Great to know! Again, thank you!

If you’re looking for a downloaded 7mm-08 what you need to look for is the superbly accurate 7mmBR. Out of a 14” barrel it runs in the 2200-2300 fps range with a 140gr. Using Nosler partitions it generally provides a “pass through” wound channel on deer sized game.

You're gonna have to go to thinner-jacket bullets to get good wound characteristics at lower velocities. A Sierra boat-tail might be a good choice; likewise, a bullet intended for varmints...

Art

Bullets for varmints should be used only on varmints, use something designed for larger animals for them.

Edit: Mass is your friend

What some may not be aware of is that the construction of Sierra and other match bullets makes them behave very much like military FMJ "ball" bullets. The penetration thereof is very much better than that of what are considered "varmint" bullets.
