Hey guys its been a bit since I've posted but I need to work up a new load for my 7mm mauser. My rifle absolutely loved 140gr nosler ballistic tips over imr4350. I'm almost out of both and with scarcity of components going to have to try something else for now.

I've got several powders aa4350, win760, western big game, h4831, rl19 to try. Bullets I've got on hand several hundred of each 140gr core loc sp, 162gr hornady interlock sp, and sierra 168gr match hp. Primers I've got on hand cci 500, win lr, and win mag lr. Brass I use ppu and Remington.

Looking for 1st hand experience with any of these components to get a better starting point than what the manuals give. The rifle is a 98k mauser sporterized with an after market barrel. Unfortunately I don't know the twist rate or the maker of the barrel.

Thanks again

I use imr 4350 with my 140s normally Sierra pro hunters but may go back to speers. Win 760 and imr4831 are a classic powder, the 4831 maybe better with heavy bullets. Twist is probably 9.25-1 or so, good enough for any normal hunting bullet made. Even 160-170 vld type bullets will still shot ok with a 1-10 twist.

What was your charge with imr 4350.

So my best understanding of the cleaning rod trick is to stick the cleaning rod in w/brush installed and measure it at approximately 1 full twist. I come up with approximately 1-9 to 1-9.5.

For 90% of my loads I've used rem brass. I picked up to 2 bags of ppu new brass recently since cant really seem to Remington right now.

So I redid the cleaning rod trick, the correct way this time. Thanks AJC1. I come up with 1-9.

The next step is to verify if your projectile weights stabilize at the velositys you can achieve. I use a process every time and build a log page for each gun. Then I know the maximum weight i can use when looking for bullets. Bearing surface also plays a part but is only huge when shifting from cup and core to monos.

That a milder load for modern loads, and for small ring load. I've used 50.0 imr 4350 with 140s for a hunting load, use 48.0 for practice. I run 3.00 with 48.0 and 3.100 with the hot load. They shoot good in my 7x57ai as well.

I checked at shooters reference. They had data for rl19, h4831, and 760 with 140 bullets, didn't check 162's.

Rl19
44.1 - 49.0 Speer 140 @2.800"

H4831
47.0 - 49.5 now bt @ 3.000"

W760
44.0 - 47.0 nbt @3.000"

They get data from manufacturers. It's an online database like hodgens. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the feedback so far. I settled on 46.5grs and 140gr ballistic tips because the great accuracy and light recoil. Worked up to 48grs in .5gr increments but accuracy wasn't as good. Did try win748 with the ballistic tips but wasn't impressed. Used the hornady 10th for that loads starting point. I really didn't try to much else. I mainly use this rifle as a range gun.
