7mm Rem Mag or 300 Win Mag

300wm for me. I was a die hard 7RM fan for a long time, but began favoring the 300wm about 8yrs ago, and don’t expect I’ll ever look back. I still own both, but the 7RM’s are in the back row of my safe, with my 300wm in front.

Ultimately, if there’s anything I’m doing for which I truly need or want to burn ~80grn of powder to accomplish, I want more bullet weight than the 7RM manages. Alternatively, anything I’m doing which is best accomplished by 150-180grn bullets, I simply don’t need a magnum cartridge.

I own a 7mm mag and a 300 win mag, I still take my 270 win out hunting, 300 mag is way overkill in my opinion for elk and deer, I actually only hunt private land these days because so many people carry a win mag out deer hunting and it scares me with the amount of yahoo's that come to hunt out where I live.

i like my 7mm mag, but like others have said it takes to much powder, and belted cases bring up a whole nother aspect of reloading them.

300 win mag is cool at the range it makes a louder noise when the bullet strikes the steel at 500.

I put them both into the catagory of they are cool and all, just not practicial

Seems everyone near me has a 7mm mag. The deer here are small, so not sure why the 7is in such wide use. I feel the 270 is overkill, bit it is the smallest I have that is acceptable for deer size game.

I do not think anyone alive now will see the end of the 7mm Remington Magnum as a common commercial round. Of the two, I will go with the 7mm RM but that is heavily influenced by my getting a genuine Remington 700ADL in 7mm RM from Walmart for $99 with scope NIB :). I installed better rings and a Nikon scope and it shoots like a freaking laser beam. :) ;) I took the provided scope and rings and recycled them to a lesser rifle.

Just showing off now but it was sweeter than sugar of Walmart that I got a matching .243 Winchester also for $99.

The OP mentioned 1000 yards. Yeah, coyotes don't Magnum firepower, but with that range requirement, I'm surprised at all the slower recommendations.
1000 can be run with .22s, .243s, .308s etc fairly easily, several members have shared results on here often enough that without the full use of googlfu we can see that magnums ain't needed for 1000, and if shooting regularly, the barrel cost will have to be accounted for as well. 6.5 creed/prc/Norma/grendel have all been proven farther than the average shooter will ever consider.

Of the two you listed, I think you’ll get more mileage from the 7mmRM.

You don’t need to go full throttle all the time, loads duplicating the 7x57, 7mm08 or .280 are easily done at the reloading bench.

As for reloading the cartridge, I didn’t find it any more difficult than reloading any of my other centerfire rifle rounds with a shoulder (.30/30, .35 Rem, 6.5x55,.270, .243. .257 Roberts ) and it loaded just as easy as the .300 Weatherby.

Stay safe.

Good morning THR.

With 2021 coming up it’s time for me to get a new rifle. I currently own Remington 700 ADL in 223 rem. It’s a great rifle and has served me well as a range/target/hunting/everything else. My wife enjoys shooting it so I’m not getting rid of it. Whoever i want to add another option with more power. Let’s keep the 6.5 Creedmoor, 308 win 270, or 30-06 out of the discussion because I feel that 7mm win mag and 300 win mag are both superior of those mentioned.

this new round needs to fulfill the following Roles
-Hunting (Hogs, Deer, Coyotes...)
-Range/Target up to 1000 yards Silhouette

I reload so ammo is not an big issue for me plus both rounds are fairly available in my area.

thank you for your input.
Blackfin.

^ What rifle/chambering have you been using to fill these rolls, or will you be new to them?

I went 300WM just due to the commonality of components with my other 30 Cals..
and for me it's really just a 1000 yard rifle to smack steel with anymore....You hear the boom and than the SMAAAAACK of steel with the 220 grain SMK

since you reload anyway- it's an easy cartridge to reload for. I load 30 Caliber from Mild to Wild and just enjoy the trigger time.
I'm actually waiting for Graf and Sons to deliver some of the 300WM Long Petersen Brass to play with...it's longer than Standard 300WM Brass- so less case working
A Larry Willis Belted Magnum Collet Die will be your friend either way.

Sure you didn't over pay? $99:D
I would have bought a couple for spares at that price.

I don't own a .300 but I like my 700 BDL in 7 RM.
Enough gun for most anything I would want to hunt, good BC bullets if you need to reach out there.

Recoil is not bad IMO but you will sure feel a difference from the .223:)

I did overpay, some guys got them for $89 ;). I feel cheated sometimes but I will likely get over it. Even overpaying as I did, I am still voting 7mm Remington Magnum, like a .270 Winchester but more, more recoil, more blast, more money for ammo ;).
