Apples and oranges. Totally different design. The 870 was designed over 50 years ago to compete with guns like the Winchester model 12 and Ithaca 37. The 887 was designed to be cheaply produced on modern machinery with little or no skilled labor, to compete with guns like the Benelli Nova, and other plastic wonder-guns.

Actually, it was the Rem 870 that was designed to be cheaply produced on modern machinery with little or no skilled labor.

And it wasn't intended to compete with the Winchester Model 12 or Ithaca 37.
The older Remington Model 31 tried to do that and failed.

The 870 was designed in 1950 to sell cheap enough to blow Model 12 & 37 sales clear out of the water!
Which it did.

Remington did the same thing after WWII with the Model 721/722 rifle design that later became the Model 700.
Winchester couldn't continue to compete with the old school Model 70 manufacturing methods.
