870 Dimple Removal Instructions.

Hi,

I was wondering if there is a video on the internet on how to remove Express dimples or if there's a pictorial guide floating around.

Any help would be appreciated.

Not that I’m aware of however other owners have used a drill, dremel tool or file to remove the dimples. Don’t forget the heavy duty replacement spring. Good luck.

I used my rotary tool and ground out the dimples from the inside. They are ground level to the surrounding surface, but I managed to keep the metal in place where the dimples were. When you drill them out, it leaves two holes.

I never replaced my spring. What's wrong with it?

there removal isn't to difficult just use a dremel or drill... it doesn't have to be pretty as its covered up when the guns assembled

I dremeled mine down. I put some oiled rag in the hole farther down and after the dimples were down, I finished with some fine sand paper. After that I pulled all of it out...clean and smooth.

Best bet is to buy an 870 that doesn't have dimples in the first place, if it's a problem. There are plenty of them out there. Just start unscrewing the magazine cap on any Express gun you have questions about. If you hear a CLACK CLACK CLACK as you turn the mag cap, it has dimples. Just put it back on the rack and look for another one... or leave the dimples in place and don't worry about it. Removing the dimples can cause more problems than it solves.

The most recent cheap used Express gun I bought (last week, $195 + tax, with a 20" RS ImpCyl barrel in place) had dimples. No big deal- I'm leaving them in place, since they don't bother me. That gun won't be wearing a magazine extension anyway. A shorter stock and a better recoil pad, yes- but no mag extension.

I've seen too many guns with bent or warped magazine tubes, erratic feeding due to parts of the dimples left in the tube, rough spots etc. from DIY attempts to remove dimples. Then there comes the hassle of making magazine caps and magazine springs stay in place without the mechanisms to keep them there. IMHO it just isn't worth the hassle- and yes, I have drilled out a couple of sets of dimples myself years ago. But I'm too old to have patience for the hassle these days, and I won't be doing it any more. For anyone else, of course, YMMV.

If you are adding a mag extension, drill out the dimple and finish with sanding. A bit of cold blue and a touch of CLP and you are done. About 15 minutes. Done a couple recently, all function perfectly.

The best way I've done it is to find a deep scocket that is tight in the tube and put a piece of tape on a body hammer and tap the dent flat.

Dont over do it, your just floating the dents out.

-And then finish with a brake cylinder hone, cold blue, and CLP.

(I picked up one that had half of the dimples removed - awkward... .)

that video was good...but he started with the holes already in place. i know its just drilling a hole, but sometimes its nice to see someone actually do it.

my gunsmith said he'd bang them out for $30. if i ever decide to take care of them, i'll probably go that route.
