I haven't shot my 870 in a while. The last time I shot it everything was fine. I picked it up recently and quickly noticed that the action does not lock closed. i.e., I can rack the slide without pressing the slide release button. I haven't disassembled the gun in a while but can anyone offer an explaination of why this may be happening and how to repair it? Is this simple enough to tackle at home or should this be handled by a gunsmith?

I'd say a basic teardown and cleaning, plus careful reassembly should fix most "typical" issues...
When I have some time to breathe, I'll tear it down and clean it. I'm sure I cleaned it after the last time I used it, but probably didn't totally tear it down. I haven't used this gun in quite some time.

Usually, when the gun fails to go into battery its because the barrel isn't sitting back fully into the receiver, which in turn is caused by a loose retainer nut on the end of the magazine tube, which in turn usually happens after you've cleaned it and just didn't tighten it all back up.
Before you break it all down, I'd just check the barrel nut (unless you really want an excuse to break it all down).

They're probably right about the retainer nut/screw. But I'm one of those people who'd just as soon get it ALL out of the way the first go-around so I don't feel stupid for missing somethin' obvious!
