The action on my 20 gauge 870 Express isn't locking - I can pump the slide up and down, for example, without pulling the trigger or pressing the action release. It looks as if the action release isn't doing its job for some reason - the little tab is staying in the "pressed-up" position.

This problem only happens with the barrel in and the magazine cap screwed in all the way - if I leave the cap "loose", I can get the action to lock forward, but I suspect this isn't normal.

Any help appreciated. :)

Using a non marring tool like a chopstick or golf tee, drop out the trigger group and see if there's detritus stopping the cycling of the disconnector thingie. Pull the bolt and see if there's grunge there or in the barrel extension.

HTH....

Is this a new gun? It sounds like the pumphandle does not come forward enough to lock-up. If it locks with the cap loose, it sounds like mag tube is too short or the barrel ring is bent back. I am not sure how you could cause either of these things except through severe abuse or factory defects.

Mike

Another less-frightening thought.......

It could also be that the ring/nut that secures the pump-handle to the slide is loose/backed off too far and it stopping the action too soon as it hits the mag cap.

We to the "slam the butt on the ground" part yet? :D

Oh - guess we have a bit to go before "drop kicking" ? Bigger hammer been tried by now - huh?

*shrug* gotta be a something loose, not snug, dirt, assembly dealie. Far be it from me to "suggest" a Total take down and <gasp> clean and lube, and re-assemble...got my reputation to maintain and all...

...still like the "slam butt on the ground" - I like to see the looks on folks faces with high dollar guns....*snicker*...

Bingo! Thanks, guys. Didn't even realize it was that loose.
