i just bought an 870 express synthetic 28" with single front bead; i was wondering about everyone else's experience with deer hunting using it as i live in iowa and it is slug country; how does everyone like the gun and what kind of distance should i be comfortable shooting at; i have both the mod and im. cyl. choke. it is a smoothbore and i am not looking into getting a rifled barrel.
thanks, tony

Rifled slugs ought to do the trick out to say fifty yards or so... I've heard good things about Federal Tru-Ball.

You're shooting a smoothbore, so Buckshot or Rifled Slugs are your best bet.

It'll do as well as you can make it do, given ammunition it likes. Only way to know is to buy some 5-packs of different slugs (for a smoothbore, stick to Foster type or rifled slugs, no need for sabots) and then go punch some bug holes in paper. Stop by your local newspaper and see if they sell end rolls of newsprint from the printing presses, then $1-a-can spray paint gets you lots-o-big-targets, really cheep. Nice thing about sighting in with 12 ga. slugs, no need for a spotting scope. Bad thing is, it isn't exactly a recreational activity. My advice is to shoot standing using a rest, not from a bench, if you gotta bench the gun, sit up straight. The clamp-on sights ArmedBear mentioned might help if you have trouble getting on target with just a bead- but try the bead first, you already have that, and it's paid for.

Good hunting,

I have a 20" 870 in 20ga Smoothbore. I have no issues getting foster (aka rifled) slugs on a man sized target at 50 yards using a bead. This was a three gun match, so I was putting down range as fast as I could, even then, I was geting groups the size of a dinner plate for 3 shots. If I took more time, that grouping could easily get into the fist sized range.

hi Perkis,, just thought i would jump in here ,, i am originaly from ohio,,it too is a slug state,, and my 870 and 1100 remingtons have put plenty of venison in the freezer over the years... as Lee has stated above try different brands of slugs to see which one the gun likes,, there will be a difference,,, my barrels seem to have a preferance for the remington sluggers 1oz.,,, although the 1100 will shoot winchester 1oz slugs pretty well too..... i like to set the guns up for 50 yrds. and if i need to shoot to 75yrds. i feel confident in making a shot like that.. my barrels are remington slug barrels with rifle sights,,,and both of these guns will group inside 3" at 50yrds. i have found too that the biggest reason for smoothbores to start slinging shots all over the place is that the barrel will lead up,,, and when that happens accuracy is out the window.... so get your self a good bronze brush and after you shoot the gun with slugs give it a good scrubing,,,one more thought,,, i like to put these gun on a bench and sand bags,,,i'm gona tell you right now that 870 is gona hurt you if you sit there and let it keep pounding the hell out of you.... spread it out over a few days,,, 4-5 shots today,,,, and wait a few days and do another 4-5 shots ,,with maybe a different brand,,, when you get her shootin for ya,,and you are looking down the barrel at a deer,,, you won't even notice the kick that's just some things i have learned over the years of smooth borein YMMV just my .02 good luck and git a bigun

When I bench anything with ANY recoil I use a "wuss" pad. I cut a piece from an old foam cushion used by hunters in cold weather. Cut it a little larger than the recoil pad and sit up straight! Good stress relief! Yeah! Lacking a pad, a small sandbag help (a little). My 870 HD will hold a 3" group at 50yds w/ just a bead (from the sandbags!).

Stay safe.
Bob
