I have a 870 express that needs a makeover. I have already refinished the stock and forearm and they look great. My question is how can I bring the metal on the gun back to life. There is no rust or pitting on the action or barrel, but it just looks old. I have done some research on this subject, but I was hoping to get a few more opinions.

It looked old when it was new.:p Gun Scubber the heck out the stripped down action (and bbl.) and rub on a lot of either Break Free CLP or RemOil, reassemble it, lubing as you go. It's really about all you can do with these, use some 0000 steel wool on any light surface rust you encounter, or your fingernails are better, they will not scratch the gun.:)

I found an somewhat worn 870 Express at a pawn shop for $80.00. Since the price was right I bought it and turned it in to a home defense gun. I cut the barrel to 18", and refinished the stock wuth Tru-oil. I refinished the metal with Brownell's Oshpo blue. It is easy to apply and produces a durable finish. It came out pretty good and currently resides beside my bed.

The least expensive way is a coat of cold bluing. Buff it a bit on a cloth wheel and a bit of jeweller's rouge, degrease it completely and put on the bluing. Oil it when you're finished.
Plan 'B' is to have it parkerized.
