What do I need to seperate the wood front forearm from the metal action rods/arms? Does someone have a cheap trick to doing this, or is there some specialized tool which I need to purchase?

Cheap trick: needle nose pliers, ends wrapped in tape. Once you've removed the forend assembly from the shotgun, stick the plier ends in the notches of the forend retaining nut and back it out going counterclockwise

But don't slip.
One poster on another forum was outraged when he followed the pliers advice and slipped, damaging the thin steel tube badly enough that he had to buy a new tube and bar assembly.

I HAVE NOT TRIED THIS, and I'd be really careful about trying this due to the risks of damaging the part, BUT.......one person says he's used the gun's slide as a wrench to unscrew the nut.

Better advice is, see if your local gun shop has a fore end wrench, OR, make up a spanner from some 1/8" thick steel plate that will fit the notches.
Use some Vise-Grips to grip the spanner and unscrew the nut.

Thanks guys. I have not looked yet, but I assume Brownells sells the proper tool, but I am only going to use it once. Does anyone want to "rent" me theirs?

I have a one that came with my Surefire forend. It's nothing special just a piece of metal cut to fit in the nocthes. It worked fine on my 870. I can send it to you if you'll send it back ;)
