870 forend tube issues.

For the life of me, I cannot get the forend nut off of my 870 Police Magnum's standard forend.

I need to remove the forend tube in order to install my SureFire dedicated forend weaponlight.

Are there any differences between the Wingmaster forend tubes and the Police Magnum forend tubes? eBay auction has a spare tube/nut for $25, wondering if it will fit.

TIA for any answers.
 
It sounds as if the nut is just stuck. If this is so there are several ways to free it up. One method is to turn it upside down (barrel pointed down) in a bucket or something similiar to catch the residue. Now use a good amount of penetrating oil on the nut and let it soak over night. This may need several applications. Another is to take a pair of slipjoint plyers with PADDED jaws (won't tear up the nut) and a rubber or nylon mallet. While trying to turn the nut gently tap the nut. Some folks use both for the really stuck ones. They soak it first then use the plyers and mallet. I have also heard that pushing down on the barrel (gun unloaded of course) may relieve some pressure off the nut. If these methods don't work take it to a gunsmith before risking ruining a good shotgun. The parts from almost any 870 should fit on another 870 although the finishes may not match.
 
If none of those work, trying the penetrating oil and use heat from a hair dryer (NOT a torch), to gently warm the steel to allow better penetration
 
I believe Hajeger is asking about the forend nut that attaches to the forend tube assembly - not the magazine cap.

Hajeger - what tool are you using to remove the nut? The penetrating oil suggestions below may work for this situation, as well. I have collapsed a forend tube assembly attempting to remove a stuck nut (the metal is farily thin) - so go easy :).
 
Penetrating oil and a light tapping to shake the oil into the threads might be enough. If not, a vise and a small cheater bar may be in order. I don't have the proper wrench, but I believe anything 3/16 thick that can fit in there should be fine. I use a small piece of G10. For a stuck nut, I drilled a hole through it and stuck a 8" long reamer through it for some extra power.
 
If this is a used gun and you are working with the original furniture, then you've got X years of crud accumulation built up in trying to free that nut.

Echo Bix - "what tool are you using to remove the nut?" There is forend wrench available. They run about $20. Penetrating oil does take time to soak through.

I have the forend nut removal tool. Two of them, actually....bent both.

Used PB Blaster penetrating oil on the thing.

Then parked my car's rear tire over the forend assembly (off the gun, duh) with the forend assembly wrapped in a t-shirt for protection. Didn't have access to a vise.

Gripped the forend nut removal tool with channel-locks and attempted to turn.

Bent the tool.


On a side note, your Remington polymer forend will survive being parked under a 98 Audi A4 Avant quattro with 200lb of tools in the back...

Then I posted here. Thinking about buying another forend tube at this point. There's a cheap one on eBay, I am thinking it will work as long as there are no major differences across 870 models. The thing will be concealed by the SureFire forend anyway.
 
I have done many. A couple of good squirts of Kroil, wait a couple of days, and a homemade wrench and tapping the handle has always worked so far. Haven't screwed up a tube or cracked wood yet.
 
Holy crap. I'd be more worried about collapsing the tube; glad it stood up. Audi makes an expensive vise. :D

Before I knew any better, I bought a tube from a 3rd-party parts supplier for almost 70 bucks. Then I looked on eBay and found them all day for $30 bucks. Get two!
