870 mag ext. removal

I have seen a 870 police model with a mag extension that kind of clamps to the barrel (an 18" barrel). If I wanted to buy a 2nd barrel, say a 28" for breaking clays, could I take the 18" barrel off and also the mag. extension and replace the latter with a regular mag. cap?

You would also need the stock tube spring. Other than that, you can do exactly as you discribed.
