I have a new Remington 870 Express Home Defense, haven't put a single round through it yet sadly. But I want this to be like a multipurpose shotgun for Home Defense and clay shooting/hunting so this is the model with the 18" barrel not the 18.5" and it does have the swap-able barrels unlike some of the home defense models. First I'm getting a blued 30" vent ribbed barrel then I'm getting a +2 Remington mag tube extension. My question is I'm getting this exact one http://www.shopremingtoncountry.com...archPage=1&searchRank=salesrank&searchSize=12 would this be flush with the barrel? It says it is for the 18" barrel and I have six inches from the end of my current tube to the tip of the barrel. Its okay if it sticks out a little bit but I'd prefer it to be flush. My goal is to be able to go shooting or hunting then swap the barrel back to my 18" to keep by the bedside until I can get another one. Also what are some tips for breaking in a new 870? Thanks!

It's going to stick past 18" or 18.5" barrel. You will also need to remove magazine tube dimples designed to hold spring stop before having functional two shot extension. You will need solid low drag follower plus quality spring to prevent cartridge jams at junction of magazine tube & extension. I'm leaving my Wingmaster Supermag as 5-shot piece as it is too much hustle to increase capacity. I will purchase small light weight piece extension about 2" (the kind skeet & trap shooters use to add weight to front end of gun) so I can mount tube rail attachment piece for battle light.
If you're going to order Remington extension you should be able to get it for less then $60+. Do shop around.

So on the tube title it says 18" mag extension kit does that mean its meant for an 18" barrel or that the extension itself is 18"? And are there any +2 tubes made just for the 18" barrel? Because I thought I had the 18.5" but it was actually the 18" I'd rather it be shorter than longer. edit: I actually just checked up on it and people say that they still advertise it as an 18" but it is really a 18.5" because they measure from the closed bolt to the muzzle. Can anyone verify that? Because on my manual it says its an 18 and I measured it from the receiver to the muzzle and it was 18" but if its true about the closed bolt then I actually have a 18.5"

My 870P has a 18" barrel and plus 2 extension and it is even with the barrel .

You do not have an 18" barrel on a new 870 because Remington stopped making 18" years ago. Your model 25549 has an 18.5" even though the box still says 18". They have simply not changed the labels after all these years. So, yes the Remington LE 2 shot extension ends flush. However, the one you show is a blued one for the blued Wingmaster finish and not the black Oxcide one for your Express finish.

As you can see I have a few of this model in my gun room and all have an 18.5" Bead sight cyl bore matte finish barrelyet the label says 18".

Thank you for clearing that up! I guess to some people the tube being flush really doesn't matter but for some reason small things like that bother me a lot. And yeah I know the finish is different, but all I could really find is parkerized or blued for the tubes, so I ordered a 30" Blued Vent Rib barrel so I'm going to at least match the tube extension with the barrel. Is there much of a visible difference between blued and what the 870 is already made out of?

The parkerized extension will most closely match the black oxide finish on your Express receiver and bbl.

Perfect answer. The Express finish was designed to look like parkerizing and with both oiled you would be hard pressed to tell the difference a few feet away.

Well hell, I already ordered the blued barrel and its shipped, so I'll just stick with the blued tube as well since its about 30 or so dollars cheaper and being a college student doing odd-jobs to get money a little finish difference wont bother me (yet the tube being flush bothers me, haha weird)

The factory specs say it's an 18" CYL bore - that would mean it's actually 18 1/8", but who's counting :D.

The plus 2 factory extension is flush with the 18.5" barrel and will be a bit longer than the 18" - unless they changed the specs and haven't updated the website. Even if it is it won't matter functionally, and my old blue/walnut 18" 870P with a factory plus 2 looks just fine to me.
