I have a new 28" 870. I hunt and shoot clay games with it. One problem. I have found that I am slower on the mount than I would like with this gun. I am 5' 9". Because my weak hand is so far extended on the forend to operate the pump, I have to extend my arms to the maximum degree first to get the buttstock to clear my clothes, then mount it on my shoulder. Duck hunting is even worse when I have bulky clothes.

I am considering a youth stock. But, I am not sure if that will create a new set of problems putting my face to close on the gun. This is a hunting gun.

Any suggestions?

You are kind of an in between size but there are a couple solutions. Try a youth stocked gun and see how it fits, try it with both regular clothes and hunting clothes. If it seems like it will do go that route. Other options would include shortening your current stock by 1/2 inch or so. (if it is wood).

Anther option is an adjustable stock so you can fit it to the situation

you probably need a 13 3/4 length of pull,,maybe a 13 1/2

how long is the stock,,seem all the gun people are putting a 14 1/4-1/2 stock on their guns

i'm 5'9" ,, and the 13 3/4 is my go to number

choate makes an adjustable stock that i have on my HD guns,, and i have them at the shortest setting,,IIRC it is 13"

just remember you will shoot a shorter pull better than you will a longer one
