I want to replace the recoil pad on my 870. It is about 12+
years old and has a wooden stock. I see where there are two
holes in the existing rock-hard recoil "pad", but what tool
do I use to remove it? It looks too small for a screwdriver.
An allen wrench maybe?

Is there a site that shows me how to do this? I don't want to
do any damage to my old friend.

Thanks!

Take a medium sized phillips screwdriver, poke it through the holes that are already there and unscrew the pad from the butt stock.

Coltdriver nailed it. I've taken off three or four. You just have to "feel around" with the Phillips and find the screws that are up in the pad.

Sometimes it helps to use a bit of liquid soap on the driver shaft where it touches the pad. Use a #2 Phillips, I believe. Replace the pad with a Limbsaver. :)

Soap is good, or Armor-all, or any plastic "cleaner/preservative" product -- you just want to reduce the friction between the screwdriver shaft and the rubber. Use a straight, round shaft screwdriver -- not a square shaft or one of the removeable bit drivers (unless you get one of the long #2 Phillips bits).

I replaced my synthetic stock with a kickeez magnum pad, and my new 870, which i hope to buy this weekend will be wood stock with either a kickeez, or im considering the limbsaver pads. I used a long philips screwdriver, and played with it for a few minutes. It will come off eventually :).

I just installed one of those new Remington recoil pads made by Limbsaver. It works pretty well. Instead of being bruised after a few hundred rounds, I am only sore. A good buy for 30 bucks.
