Shotgunners,

Now that I've been getting into skeet/trap I need to rig my 870
to be more 'shoulder forgiving'. I know nothing about recoil pads,
but want to get one. Do they slip over the stock? Do I replace
the existing rock-hard pad that comes with 870?

Any pointers or advice would be appeciated.

Remington has a new pad that felt like it gave significantly more cushion by my unscientific comparison to the oder style pad tha came on my new 870Express Magnum HD. They are selling it on their web site now. If you have a dealer in your area call and ask if they have a recently manufactured Marine Magnum (it will definitly have the new pad) and you can judge for yourself.

Gun fit will come into play here. Check the threads on this, and / or get a shooter /gunsmith that can help you get your gun to fit proper. Proper gunfit will do so much in the recoil dept., as well as hitting what you look at.

LOP ( length of pull) , pitch, and drop change with thicker pads or slip on pads.

No trying to confuse or complicate, just sounds like you have been BA/UU/R and now can use some fine tuning on gun fit. Including the recoil pad.

Sometimes to maintain or get the proper fit , yes the stock is "cut" this can be critical , before a new pad is installed.

Partial to Deacelertors myself...sometimes radius of toe/heel inside helps as well. Bunches of pads to choose from...I'd get some assistance with this and fit.

The old red trestle pads turn hard after a while. Exposure to sun seems to speed the petrification.

I've gotten good input about the S-3 pads now used, but little direct experience.

The Pachmyer Decellerators are the best I've had.Still a contender for best.

KickEez and Gooey have their fans also.

You can get a slip on, but they tend to shift at awkward times.

Size can aid as well as softness. A pad installed and left untrimmed with more surface area contacting the shoulder feels better, though looks odd.

HTH...

My personal favorite is the Pachmyer Decellerator. They're soft enough to take some of the edge off the recoil, but don't hang up on the mount like some of the softer/stickier models do.

I'd echo sm's comments about getting some help with fit, as getting a new recoil pad is an ideal time to fine-tune things. The last time I had one swapped out, I also had the stock trimmed a smidge, adjusting the angle very slightly. The guy doing the work also relieved the toe a bit and beveled the heel to promote a better fit and smoother mount.

BTW, although I've not used one... I've heard very good things about the Gooey recoil pads, mostly from trap shooters. One friend swears by his, but only likes it for games using a pre-mounted gun.

I've got the Remington R3 on both my 870 clones and the difference in perceived recoil is amazing. I can now shoot slugs & buck all day w/o discomfort.

The Remington R3 is a Remington-branded Limbsaver Brand made by Sims Vibration Labs. It is excellent. Generally the pads for synthetic stocks and for wood stocks will not interchange, because the synthetic stocks are hollow and those pads have a heeled base that slides a bit into the stock. Try the Limbsaver product line for a wood stock pad.

I just put the Remington R3 pad made by Limbsaver on my 870 and it makes a nice and noticeable difference. It really tames harder recoiling ammo and turns light loads into nothing.

I will also throw a vote towards the Pachmayer Pre-Fit Decelerator. I use this pad on all my wood-stocked 870's and it is the best I've seen, so far.
It is nice and soft without being sticky so it does not grab at your clothing during the mount.

Is there an online source for the Sims R3 pad? I want to try one on my Benelli but there are no local dealers that I know of.
