I installed a Scattergun Technology (Wilson Combat) 2 round mag extension on my Remington 870 12ga.

I have a newer generation 870 that required removing the “dimples” from the magazine tube to allow the follower to move into new extension.

So the mag extension/endcap no longer has a positive locking mechanism.

The mag extension feeds reliably and seems like a quality piece.

But…. No matter how tight I start out making the mag extension knurled mount it ALWAYS works loose and the barrel then has movement from the receiver – which is not good.

It will be loose after more than 10 rounds or so.

I do not want to loctite it because of the need to teardown the gun for cleaning etc.

What do you guys do? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks.

There's two way that work for me, one is to drill the magazine tube support for the spring and plunger like the older 870's or the use of a extension clamp will hold the magazine extension in place when shooting.
There are a couple of smiths here that install the spring and plunger, we charge $35.00 to do so. shipping price is the issue.

A magazine clamp will prevent the tube from coming unscrewed.
In any case, you SHOULD use a clamp.

Without a supporting clamp, a good bump can actually knock the extension off the gun, which usually damages the gun's magazine tube threads.
Replacement of the damaged 870 tube is a factory job.

You can use the "blue loctite" it holds good but you can still unscrew the nut. Don't use the red it stays in place real good.

Use a clamp, both to solve the unscrewing problem and to protect the threads on your magazine tube in case you accidentally whack the extension on something.

Put a rag around the knurled part and use channel locks to tighten it down. Mine's never come loose.

I hate ATI stuff. Wilson combat extensions are great, ive owned 4 or 5 and have never had a problem with them working loose. I think possibly the reason your having problems is because you have tampered with the mag tube itself. How about using some plumbers tephlon tape? put about 3 or 4 wrapes around the male threads then tighten the wilson extension on.

Does your barrel have a ball bearing? if not, that could very well be the reason why the tube is working loose when you shoot it.

The modification of removing the "dimples" was required so that the mag follower could pass freely from the 870 mag tube into/out of the mag extension.

Becuase of this required modification there is no ratcheting mechanism left so its strickly how tight I can screw on Scattergun Tech mag extension.

The mag extension did not come with a clamp and Wilsons point of view is that it does not need one.

I took your guys suggestion and purchased a cheap barrel/mag clamp and so far so good.

I was worried that it would effect accuracy but it does not seem to have done so even with the barrel hot from shooting lots of slugs.

Thanks for all the suggestions and help.

I must be missing something...

How does removing the magazine dimples affect the locking/racheting mechanism on the barrel and extension ring?

shoen1200, I have done the dimple modification and know exactly what is invloved. Doing this modification will not effect any locking mechanisim, the
only thing that locks your magazine extension in place is the ball bearing the barrel has. If your barrel does not have the ball bearing, your extension will work loose.
