i just bought a brand new remington 870 express. ive noticed that there are tool marks on the upper part of the receiver. the lock for the bolt is dragging on the tool marks on the receiver. my question is was it left there for a reason or just a skipped step to cut cost.

That is the most likely answer. The locking block on an 870 will usually hit the top of the receiver lightly and leave a few marks over time anyway. The sharper to top angle on the locking block, the more they seem prone to do it. Won't hurt anything.

after 20 cycles not even fired yet its already leaving a mark. it looks like the receiver is threaded. i'm probably gonna smooth it out with a dremel

Can you post pics before you dremel it? You should never remove material on a firearm unless it is absolutely necessary. It would be best to let some more knowledgeable people see what is going on with your 870 and how you should proceed.

If you dremel it out, you can kiss any chance of warranty work goodbye.

A new Express came home with me a few years ago. I stripped the receiver and began cleaning only to discover that there were many sharp edges and snags inside. For better or for worse, I grab a Lansky stone and begin lightly going over every edge and snag until I can freely wipe down the receivers internals without my cleaning cloth snagging on something, or feeling like I might slice open my hand.

On the plus side, the action was now amazingly slick. A very nice surprise.

On the minus side, some of the finish may be removed and require oil to prevent rust, but so-far-so-good.

If you try the same, it would not be at my advice -- the risk is yours.

i know the express is a utility shotgun thats why i bought it. but it doesnt mean i cant research ways to make it better. so keep your opinions on what i should buy to yourself. As for everyone else trying to help ill get pics up soon

I have a Mossberg 500 that looked similar inside the receiver and I understand exactly where you're coming from. I went over some rough spots with some 2000 grit sandpaper by hand on mine but I wouldn't go wild with a Dremel though for sure. It can be real easy to take off too much with one of those. Post some pics though, I'm interested in seeing what it looks like.

Very true, especially with the aluminum receiver of the Mossberg. The Remington is a steel receiver, and it's a bit tougher to remove material.
The Mossberg is a good gun though, and reliable.

Quit buying the Express if you are looking for quality. You bought the cheapest 870 not the Wingmaster.

I had a few issues with my express, but Remington fixed it on their dollar.

OP, these guns will smooth themselves out. I'd send pics directly to Customer Service at Remington. I polished with a drill a bit, and it didn't help, so my advice is send back and request a shipping label.
