870 upgrades

I got a newer 870, all synthetic on stock. I wanted to do a 9 round extension. I understand there are some parts available for quicker and more reliable cycling. I had one years ago and was not particularly thrilled with cycling, seemed a little clunky compared to my ithaca but didn't think about addressing at the time. Anyone have any suggestions as to what parts I need and where to get them? Going for a 3 gun kind of set up, looked like a fun project. Any ideas appreciated. Done a few ar15 80% builds but no shotguns.

I did a Carlesons' 2-shot extension and Volquartsen Exact Edge extractor. Some folks like a stronger lifter dog spring, but mine works fine.
The Carlesons' kit comes with a longer mag spring and a much beefier, though still plastic, follower- there are billet aluminum followers out there and that would be my next upgrade.

I'm really happy with the result, she handles and shoots great.

Great topic, I'll be watching this one, I'm in the same boat, stock 870 with an 18.5" mossberg barrel, looking to sauce it up.

There are lots if accessories for the Rem 870. I have one with an AR style adjustable stock for critter control around our hobby horse farm, With a quick adjustment, the stock can be configured for my 5'-2": wife or I can extend it for my 5'-11" frame.

Not exactly the answer the OP is looking for but the point is there are lots of Rem 870 accessories out there and he should be able to find what he is looking for.

870 is the best pump shotgun for the money!

I might pick up another for Trap! been getting into shotguns again. Hear me out… I don’t want a heavy wood stock, prefer laminated or plastic. They fit me really well

The best accessory for my 25 year old 870 expresss is OIL!!!! I've probably rubbed a gallon of the stuff on it over the years and it's the one firearm in my safe that still likes to get surface rust if she doesn't get regular attention.

Seriously though, a buddy had one with cycling issues and he found a burr in the chamber. A few minutes with a small file took care of his problem.

For better reliably in a gun that going to be used fast, the two critical parts are a Police grade stronger carrier dog spring, and surprisingly, a stronger magazine spring.

The carrier dog spring insures the carrier will go up all the way to the feed position.

The stronger magazine spring is to prevent "out running the gun".
That's what can happen if you operate the gun at speed, especially with heavy buckshot or slugs.
In that situation, the gun recoils, and the shells in the magazine tube under inertia move forward in the tube.
If you're operating the gun very fast, you can actually do so before the shells in the tube can be pushed back into the feed position by the magazine spring and the shell simply isn't in feed position.

Police guns have stronger carrier dog springs, stronger magazine springs, and a stronger trigger spring to prevent accidentally pulling a light trigger under stress.
They also have a machined extractor and ejector.

IMHO you'll want a heavy gun for trap.
Weight reduces recoil.

Here's an additional parts source (he has years of experience setting up Remingtons for combat purposes as well..) and used to post on this site...

Reliability upgrades include forged extractor, heavier carrier dog spring, and heavier mag spring and follower. Other upgrades some consider essential, although not necessarily reliability related, include oversized safety button, magazine tube extension, sidesaddle, and better sight(s).

As dfariswheel mentioned, police carrier dog spring, an extended mag spring, and a Volquartsen extractor are the best investments in a social 870.

Love the trap gun, barnfixer. No one will accidentally grab your 870 out of the rack!

In the end, I ended up trading one originally shown to my son in law for the one pictured. Other was a super mag. And kid wanted for turkey loads so I did him a solid. Ended up with a basic 870. Got knoxx stock off ebay for $60. I've heard good and bad on these but liked price and pistol grip. Added reflex sight and rail. Used laser borsight for 30 yards. Will hold (11) 3 3/4 shells topped off. Changed to alum follower. Had plastic one but seemed a little sticky somewhat. Cycles well. Haven't shot yet, snow at my usual spot. Weighs 10.7 lbs fully loaded so recoil will be tame. I'm 6'3 and 260 anyways. Was a fun project. Paid 200 for gun and about 280 for upgrades so didn't cost much. It is unweildly but what can I expect. Will report after shooting. Still shorter than old bp.

870 upgrades- Paint, not just for duck camouflage, but to keep it from rusting. Remington did something wrong with the later finishes, you just look at them and can see the red rusty dust forming.

870 Express, yes. The Wingmasters had a regular hot blue, as do the new Fieldmasters.
I think with the Express they wanted to be just like Browning, whose shotguns tend to rust easily. Seriously, it was to meet the price point of entry level pumps like the 120 Ranger.
