870 vs. 500

I have no idea what the guy points out, but the safety is in the wrong place on the 500 for a defense gun. I have become quite fond of the out of the way elevator as it does offer slightly faster reloading, but that's about all it has going for ir.

A 24min video? Who is he Cecil B. DeMill?

bullseyebob47 .....this guy's video points out why the 500 is the better hd firearm.
Sorry, it points out nothing of the sort. Nowhere in that nearly half hour video does he say anything remotely close to that.

It took him 22 minutes to say "One is not better than the other".
No kidding. It ain't the hammer, it's the carpenter.

I have an 870 Express and a 500 Security, both in 12ga. Both have a lot of rounds through them, and neither has ever malfunctioned. My wife has an 870 Express in 20ga, and it's also never malfunctioned.

I suppose this is one of those "X vs Y" arguments that will never be truly settled, as it's 99% personal opinion.

I recently picked up my first 870, to join the 590 and the 500 I've grown up with. I did a bit on research on the difference between the two, and this post was the best of the lot. Nice, succinct breakdown of the entire discussion, right there.

I like all of them, but I do have one useful thing to add - if you intend one as a defensive gun, then stick with whatever platform you're most accustomed to. There is a right place for the slide release and the safety, and that place is "where you expect them to be".

Next time pick a topic we haven't discussed here at THR, like 9mm vs. .45 or AR vs. AK :).

I prefer the 870, but if all I had when the goblins attacked was a Mossberg 500, I think I could survive. Either one will work and with good training and a lot of shooting, they and you just get smoother.

Just my .02,

Ford v. Chevy...

Use what works for you. Outside of buying a used .410 Express with a broken extractor, I haven't had any issues with any of my 870s over the last few decades. A little PM goes a long way.

Both the 870 and the 500 are good firearms. IMHO I would prefer to have hybrid of the two weapons. Start with the 870 so you would have access to all the aftermarket items available for it. Then change the 870 to use the 500's extractor and loading gate. Then change the safety so it is still at the trigger guard but an ambidextrous design. Throw in the Accu choke system and you have the perfect hybrid and all purpose shotgun.

I've had both. Sold them during lean times. Never had an issue with either one. I kept my 11-87. It's been flawless as well. I do keep a spare o ring set and keep it clean.

It is not a this -v-that. If one has knowledge of the platform and how they work, how each component interacts with the other componets in the platform then they have the knowledge to break each one down and compare. When you examin the breech bolts and the trigger plate assemblies you may stop and feel you have seen enough. You will understand which one is build stronger, which one has the best operational internals and which one is the better weapon. If of course you understand what makes one weapon superior to another and not simply where the safety or disconect is located.

Until you do this you really have no factual input. You are simply stating your preference and basing it on opinion or likes and not fact. I feel very safe in stating that most of the people getting into a debate about a 500 over an 870have only user knowledge of the weapons.

So, break both down and look. Learn how they operate and how each component interacts with in the platform then you can give the facts. Until then only opinion can be shared and of course we know that just like, well you know, everyone has an opinion.

Yet these this -v- that are almost always opinion based. I would like one person to state why the 500 breech bolt system is superior to the 870 or why the trigger plate assembly of the Mossberg is superior, or even why an aluminum receiver is superior to a steel receiver made from an single steel billet. ANY Body out there want a shot at any of that?

Have fun with this one as I will not be back into this post. No need to as I know which is the superior weapon amd these post go nowhere but around and around.

Quick! Someone go over to all the handgun subforums and make a "Glocks Suck" thread, THR will tear iteself apart.

In all seriousness, if one was a clear winner as being "better" the other would be out of business. It is all about personal preference. I for one do not like the 500 as much as the 870. Doesn't mean I won't own a Moss 500 someday, just if it came down to it I would keep the 870 and sell the 500.

After many years of being without having my original 870 Wingmaster I joined in a duck hunt. The guy I went with had a como 500, and called it his beater. Are then not made from stamped steel ? If I am correct post 1964 they are all made from stamped parts. I sold many more 870's as compared to Mossbergs Even though they were cheaper in price. The opinion back in the late 60's the 870 seemed to be a higher quality piece. Now my next question is in regard to the Express models, are they considered to be made from cheaper grades of materials ?

I don't have either. My pump HD shotguns are an old Model 12 and a Stevens 520. I like the Model 12 because it doesn't have a trigger disconnect so you can hold the trigger back and blast away. I would like to get either of the two shotguns this thread discusses....chris3

But you know, really, if you did a search, we generally have about fifteen conversations, repeated, for a decade. At some point, every firearm topic was reached and all we do these days is rehash them for newer members. To me, they remain an interesting diversion worth of conversation.

See, I fall on the side of Colt or Ruger in revolvers, M14 in semi-auto rifles, Mosin in bolt action military rifles, Savage 720 (A5) in auto shotguns, consider the PU and SVD to be true sniper rifles based on the comblock doctrines, like Wenger over Victorinox, Benchmade over Camillus or Gerber, I prefer Nikon over Leupold, a Mini-14 over an AR, consider the CZ-75 the perfect 9mm since I fall on the steel-frame hammer-fired side of the fence, support open carry, like Savage bolt-action rifles, milsurps should be preserved and not chopped up, and think 45 is better than 9mm (but prefer a .357mag).

Oh, and I own both the 870 and 500. I prefer the 500.
