I have a friend who recently picked up two police trade in Remingtons. Each cost about $200. According to him, the actions were glass smooth. Internals looked to be in excellent condition. Mostly just some cosmetic wear on the outside.

Actually I have a Handgun up for sale and when sold I will start looking for an old (60's to 70's) wingmaster with a smooth bore slug barrel. I plan on having it gone over by a smith to check springs extractor etc. and have a lefty safety installed. For a all purpose gun. the old wingmaster slug barrels are I.C.

"Police 870s have heavier springs in their action. While those actions may be smooth, they also require more force to cycle the action."

Not exactly according to the work I have done on them. The heavier sear spring makes for a very heavy trigger pull which, by nature, would prevent accidental discharge to some degree.

The heavier carrier dog spring operates the shell lifter in a more aggressive fashion.

Your article is about the differences between the Express model and the Police marked model. Most of the older Police trade ins I have acquired are Wingmasters. On more than one of them, the slide will fall to the receiver when the slide release is engaged and the shotgun is held in a vertical position. They are that slick.

I have an Express which does that. It's only a few years old and a few hundred rounds. "Slickness" is not necessarily the sole province of WM and Police guns. Just gotta know where to polish.

BEAUTIFUL!!

LOVE the VR barrel.

I have been thinking of picking up a used Express model and then putting some of the nice wingmaster furniture on it.

Have you seen what wingmaster furniture goes for these days? You'll come out much cheaper if you just buy a used wingmaster.

Honestly ...

... all you have to do to a good used Wingmaster to make it into a HD weapon is get a short barrel on (20" or less) it and load it. it will work just as well as one you spend another $200 - $300 on.

What they said...

BEFORE you decide on a mag tube extension, consider how much weight you're hanging toward the end of the gun. I've run with and without at tactical shotgun matches... and decided without for HD.

^ ^ ^ What he said, except that I have not participated in any shogun matches...

Here's my 1980 Wingmaster. I purchased it used at the LGS; it had a 28" vent rib barrel on it (still have that barrel) then replaced it with this Mossberg-Made-For-870 18.5" smooth, cylinder-bore-choke slug barrel from one of the online gun parts' megastores.

I just replaced the original recoil pad shown in the pic above with this new Remington Supercell pad and then added sling swivels...

HD loads are factory 00 buck. It's also a lot of fun to pump rifled 1 oz slugs from this thing, but there's a bit of barrel cleaning to do afterwards.

Good thread!
