Anyone have experience with the Herter "Vari-Choke"? As a thank you, I was given a beater Wingmaster with a 28" barrel that has the Vari-Choke installed. This is going to be a truck/fun gun. The original plan was to cut the barrel down to 18", but I thought about having the Vari-Choke reinstalled on the shorter barrel to make it more versatile.

Are/were the Vari-Choke's decent? Are there any limitations on the kind of shot that can be used with it?

Thanks!

The VariChokes worked fine. I don't care for them, or PolyChokes, but they do control the shot spread just like a choke should. I would be very leery of using steel, or hard tungsten shot larger than #3, or with the constriction set tighter than modified. Everything else including buckshot will be fine.
There for a time, it seemed anything there was relative to the hunting world, Herter's had a version of it, and it usually worked pretty well.
I still have my wooden dove call I got from them, and when I first got it, before the doves had ever heard a call, one blow on that thing and any dove flying within 300 yards would turn on a dime and come straight at you. And I still have 3 dozen goose decoys and 2 dozen duck decoys, too.

I would be a little leery of using steel shot with a Herters adjustable choke on any setting.

They went out of business well before steel shot was invented.
Whether or not they are up to it is open to question. And if you break it with steel shot, they don't have parts at Walmart.
