87gr VMAX loading suggestions

I think I'll try it out if I can find some Magnums. Definitely will post results!

I did get a chance to fire a little test with
Trail Boss and some 100gr bullets today. I think it's worth me working up a load with that for really small game. They sounded about like a 22 mag. We will see how that goes too.

Definitely interested in your trailboss loads, I have some 85 gr Sierra flat base varminter bullets. According to Sierra they are just hard enough to take game with careful placement but not as as TUFF as the gamekings. I'm thinking they might work beautifully for that purpose. I may not get the chance to finish getting stuff rounded up till Sept, but once I do, if you're interested, I could send you some to play with. They were on a huge sale awhile back, so I bought up quite a few......quite a few..... lol

No real desire, both 90 and 95gr were on sale when I was buying. I got both in case one didn't work well for me.
Ooooooooohhhh ok, that's cool, I didn't know if you were just wanting one in every weight or something, the hotcor might shoot tighter than the btips.

Having a job gets in the way of much funner things. I was able to plan my vacation for the cooler part of the year (hunting seasons). I'll regain myself then. Till then I'll try to work up loads for different game.

I woke up early enough to try out the Btips and 4166 and h380 today. 4166 showed promise, but h380 was a flop. 4166 got them to .75" at 35gr, but I don't know if that's fast enough. My buddy brought me some powder this morning, so I'm going to try imr4831 under them.

Also tried h380 under the 87vmax. It groups about .80" so I'm going to tweak on that some too.

I like having options for different components that I know work together we'll. Like horsey said once you know the combos that work good, you can buy in BULK!

24" hodgdon bbl with 35 gr of 4166 with that 90 gr gives a velocity of 2910. Imo at the distances you've described, that would be just fine even with the +/-150fps lost in a short barrel. You SHOULDN'T shatter it on 50 yd shots, and still get decent performance farther downrange as well.

Ok I'll tweak on that. I'll still try the 4831 too. Have you ever ran a barrel cooler when working up loads?

Nope, I run 15sec between shots minimum, the 18" barrel is the thinnest, the rest are all #4s and as long as I take it easy, they don't heat up too fast. I also prefer doing workups spring and fall lol.

I'm seeing how quick my barrel heats up this summer. 3 to 4 shots and it starts a horizontal lines about 3/4" low. At least I understand what that is now. Until seeing posts about it on THR I had no idea it did that. Of course I don't expect to be shooting 15 or 20 shot strings while hunting, so I'll just slow down more and enjoy my range time. Very interesting hobby!

Only 3/4"? Not bad! Years and years ago, before I knew any better, my friend and I were sighting in his pencil barrel .270 with factory loads and scattered them ALL over that target, 30 rounds later we gave up broke out the shotguns and had some fun with that. Later I found out the trouble, resighted in the .270 and have been shooting no more than 2 or 3 fast since then(simulating a rapid follow up) and smiling much more lol. I'm very impressed at how well you're doing with a hot barrel!

Yep, with 100gr at 100yds, I can shoot six rounds, first three clover leaf and the next three are in nearly a straight line 3/4" low and about 2.5" long. I can't do that with other bullets, just those magic 100 grainers.

Sorry about how this looks! I had to turn my target board three times so I could get all the shots on it. This is 243 with pulled 100gr bullets from RMR, and Trail Boss. It's got a big drop at 65yds(as expected), but it shoots straight! 9grs did the best for me, at the noise level I want (think 22mag-17HMR range). I'll tinker with it a little more, but I think it's a keeper. Possums, coons and tree rats beware! Loaded up a group of five at 9gr for 30yd off hand shot. This came in 2" lower than POA and grouped just less than an inch.

Wow you can see crazy far! That's a nice muley too!
I got this buck last December about 200yds from my house. Can't upload the image but it's a 10 point with about a 17" spread and 11.5" G2G. Just got lucky.
2017080395200352.jpg I decided on a false skull mount for the buck I got last December. Not scoreible, but nice for a back yard buck.
